French Boy, 13, Paints Murals for School They Are Only on Paper Because Walls Cannot Be Touched, but Lad's Talent Is Recognized by Supervisor-Talks of Future Joseph Lefer, 13-year-old student at Public School 156, is celebrating the bicentennial in a way all his own. On the walls of the auditorium and Barrett two scenes from Washington's life are growing under his paint brushes.

They are carefully painted on paper for school walls must not be "marred" even by recognized student artists. Two other murals of scenes in Puritan life, completed by Joseph earlier in the year are also there. This unusual honor of being permitted to place his work in the auditorium has been given "Miss because of the talent which Jean Nygren, his supervisor of drawing, has recognized in him. Never Heard of Washington 5 Years Never Heard of Washington 5 Years Ago Joseph takes it all as a matter of course. He does not even find it strange that so short a time as five years ago he did not even know about the "Father" of the country which is now his country, too.

Until he was 8 years old this young artist lived in the Mecca of all artists--Paris. His father, Maurice the Lefer, four had and been a a half years of the war. His mother had been a costume designer. Then his father's business, the manufacturing of leather coats, brought them sailing to America leaving behind the two big brothers, who preferred their native France. Now Joseph lives at 1319 East New York with his parents and a new kitten, Nanette, who is fast learning to speak French.

Watched Artists at the Louvre He remembers the many pets he had in Paris and the boats they sailed in the fountains. But most especially he remembers the Cathedral of Notre Dame and his visits to the Louvre. "I liked the artists best," he said. "Perspective never bothered me," he answered calmly to a question, "but I have the most trouble with the hands of my feature more experienced artists than Joseph have stumbled over. He likes to put jokes in his pictures, too, and own description of the Puritan murals is: is a man in the stocks and he feeling very sad. In the background there are some girls giggling and near the man is a boy who is laughing very hard." He giggled with delight when accused of painting a mean picture. He said that he had drawn "ever since he knew what drawing meant," and that he started to work with colors in school when he was nine. He is going to paint in oils when he "grows up." Now he spends his time watching things and drawing them.

A travel film taught him how to draw the turned up roofs of a Japanese joss house. "Weird music and oriental music" attract him because he can think up "good pictures to draw." Sometime, if he keeps at it long enough, he thinks he is going to get those hands right and perhaps young and optimistic-he hopes he may even paint like the artist he most admires, Edwin A. Abbey.
