ANNEXATION--A report, signed by Assistant Aldermen Ward, Sands and Boyce, the special committee of the Board of Assistant Aldermen of New York, was presented to the Board Tuesday evening, adverse to the proposition of uniting New York and Brooklyn in one city.

The report was accepted. The grounds on which the Committee base their dissent to the union is that it will benefit Brooklyn and Williamsburg and especially their waterfronts to the depreciation and expense of New York. We rather think that the true reason is that the New York Aldermen are satisfied that Brookwin will not entertain the idea of annexation to such a mass of vice and misrule as THE city presents. That was in the days we name now B. that is, before the time of Christ. The people, although they were highly cixilized, believed in a great number of gods and goddesses who watched over all they were doing. The Romans made up a lot of stories about these gods and believed in them so hard that many of the things we are familiar with still bear their names. The calendar that we tell the date by has a good many names that originally belonged to Roman gods or goddesses.

We'll take them in order and see where the names came from. There's January, the first month. This was named in honor of Janus, the two-faced god. He looked backward and good thing to do around the first of the year. Look back and see what you did last year and then make up your mind to do better things this new year as you look forward to it.

Janus carried a key as well as his two faces. The key was to open the door of the Roman heaven, for Janus was the official doorkeeper of that happy place. The Romans used to make statues of him to put on their gateposts and over their ways, because he was supposed to protect their homes then, guarding MARRIAGE LICENSES Nathan Herman. 29 .1479 39th st.
