Ilaxen Chattleld. principal of P. ST, the Bronx, was formally confirmed as new district superintendent to fill the vacancy caused by the election of William A. Boy Ian as associate superintendent of schools, at a meeting of the Board of Education yesterday. The Board of Superintendents last week nominated Mr.

Chatficld. who was formerly principal of P. 8 154. Brooklyn. The Board of Education also filed a request that provision be made in tle 2 hudtret for five additional district superintendents of schools.

Two of the new positions axe to be assigned to Queens and two to hrookln to relieve fast growing sections. The fifth new district superintendent will he assigned to special problem classes. In Brooklyn, Districts 8 and S7, In charge of Miss Usrle K. Rector, contain 20 schools and Districts 33 and 40. in eharjre of James J.

Reynolds, with schoois, is also considered too large. Relief In Queens. Relief in Queens Is planned for Districts and 52, where Miss Lucille Nicol Is superintendent, and for Districts 49 and 50. where Arthur Perry Jr. Is d'strict head.

Miss Nicol has 41 schools under her supervision in a territory running from Little Neck to Newtown and from Hollis to Whitestone. Mr. Perry now looks after 39 schools, from Neponsit to Bellaire and from Far Rockaway to Woodhaven. The fifth superintendence, to cor relate special problem classes, is expected to supervise nlrto a large number of classes for handicapped children who are now In institutions outside of tha city as annexes to city schools.
