Director Maurice Tourneur, It. Ik apparent, haa taken too much rare in the preparation of Hie elatror-- ate settings and not enough in the interpretation of Izola Forrester's story. The result is not unlike a movie version of "Thw Music Box all aailtter with gold paim and tinsel, but very little plot and less acting. "The White Moth" is obviously too much of an effort for the sensuous Barbara La Marr. She dpes nothing Louisa Marquardt, 84.

Za 8n Pitt. Dunbar William Boyd Y7 HATEVER there is lacking in VV vulgarity of "Changing Hus bands," the new film at the Rlvoll Theater, is more than made up by tha silliest, lowest comedy gags ever we've been suffered to squirm It Is all a jazzy and dis gusting potpurri of Avery Hopwood Mack Sennett and Cecil B. De Mille. The director general of the Para mount forces "supervised" the di reetion of frank Urson Paul Iribe. Without that famous De' Mills touch the picture might have had half a chance at least.

As it is, It doesn't. The two directors, Urson and Iribe, are reflected through the medium of this atrocity at the Rlvoll as a team of ham and egg vaudeville wags cracking a nifty a minute with a hand at each ear listening for the bravos from the audience. But there weren't any bravos. There were lots of snickers. "Changing Husbands" was orlgl nally Elizabeth Alexander's Saturday r-ost story.

"Holes, but the film version suffers pitifully by the uui-itsquing of the adaptation. Gwynne Everett was a Ritz Carlton society matron with a mind overflowing with a lot of Algonquin Ideas. Eva Uraham, on tha o. was a Variety Ingenue with a decided house and garden complex. They change places: Uwynne's husband draws little Eva and a stage door Johnny wins the heart of Uwynne.

That's the plot Just as we read It 1n the S. E. P. But with all the buffoonery and what nots interpolated by the ambitious team of urson and Iribe, Klizabetn Alexander would never recognize her own story in a month or feature nights. Leatrlce Joy plays a dual role as both Eva and Gwynne and tha trick photography used In the scenes in which Miss Joy meets herself fate to face is really ingenious.

However, tha double exposure process lends even more artificiality to the story than it was possessed of in the script. Seeing the two characters on the same screen, played by the same person, one is minded to recall that they're still doing the Impossible in the movies that In the films a man can meet a woman who looks like his wife and then not be able to tell either of them apart. Could any thing be more true to life? One of the redeeming features in "Changing Husbands" is the subtitling by H. M. Walker, head title writer for all of Harold Lloyd's more recent comedy productions, rne sud titles in tha Rivoli film have a snap and sparkle to them that stands out In sharp contrast to other episodes In the picture.

Leatrlce Joy's performance in the role of Gwynne Everett is more in keeping with her usually vivacious personality than that of Eva Graham, in which she is obviously hampered by the sit-ln-the-corner type of person she is called upon to portray, ictor Varconl is seen in his first American screen characterization since his appearance in Cecil De Mine's He is seen as Oliver Everett, a loving husband, though he Is better-fitted to play a heavy villain role. -Raymond Grif fith and Za Su Pitts in supporting parts do as well as any one could expect of them in roles so supremely stupid. Altogether, seeing "Chang ing Husbands" has the same effect as changing one's favorite brand of bootlegs It has a tendency to nauseate. So Deborah and William were taken back to the attic under the eaves and placed in their chairs und when the magio hour came around that night William said: "You were right, my dear, we are out of date and old." "You do not seem old to me," laid Deborah. "You are as handsome as when I first saw you." "Well, of course, you know I do not.

think you are old. Dsbby. sain William, "Your cheeks are as ret; and you are just as pretty as in the old days and I think your clothes far more stylish and beautiful than trios: the new dolls wear." "Oh, William, I am so happy," sa'd Deborah, beginning to cry. "That was the reason I did not wani to leave the attic. I was afraid you would see how faded and old-fash, toned I had grown." "Bosh!" said -William.

"It wss those other dolls who looked old to inc. Neither of them look as j-oung as you do, Debby. But the place for us is In this attic and I hope no one ever takes us out again. We never slept on the floor in all the long years until that night. If that is the way the new little girls treat their dolls am glad I lived in the good old-fash-lcned days." MARRIAGE LICENSES Irvin Drakbln.

Dated June S8d. 1S4. JOSEPH ROSENTHAL. Refere. DEBORAH and William were two painted wooden dolls that had lived under the eaves of the attic of an old farmhouse for so many years they had lost track of time.

Deborah's dress had once beeu beautiful pink silk and her straw bonnet had once been white ind trimmed with tiny pink rosVbuds. But now all this finery was laded and yellow with age, though her cheeks were just as red and her hair almost as golden as when It was first painted on her round little head. William, too, had once been hand slyie in those long-ago days. Rut now the black satin coat was rusty and the tightly fitted yellow satin trousers were dingy looking and his once ruffled shlrtfront hung in, ribbons. Still, to Deborah ho was as handsome as ever, for his hair was as 1 -1 111 1 1 t.

1 were quite as red as the first day she saw him, "I heard children's voices yesterday," said Deborah, one night when the msgio hour came around. "I hope shall not be taken out of the attic." "Why, Deborah, whatever do you mean?" exclaimed William. "Hers we have been for years and you oay you do not want to leave the I should T.e delighted if they took me out of this place and let mt see trio world outside oncemore." "Tou wouldn't be happy anywhere but here now, William," said Deborah. "You must remember we art too old and out of style." "Why, how you" talk," said William. "We were always the envy of all the other dolls we over met because of our stylish clothes.

I shall be glad If the door is opened tomorrow and we are taken down-' stairs." William Doll had his with, for in the morning a little girl opened the attic door and came in. "Oh. how funny!" she exclaimed, when she picked up Deborah. "And what a queer boy doll! Did the men wear clothes like that when you were a little girl, Grandma Great?" she inquired of the old lady who was with her. "Yes, my dear," replied he old lady.

"And Deborah and William were quite the moat stylish dolls around my day. William looked at Deborah out of his black eyes as if to say, "I told vou so." But there was r.o answering look In Deborah's. Her heart was quite sad within her littltr wooden breast. All went well with thm until the magic hour came around at night, hen the little girl was fast asleep and the wooden dolls were left alone with French doll Mario and many ether new-fashioned toys. "Did you ever see such queer looking folks?" whispered Marie to Henrietta, the big cloth doll.

"Where did the little mistress get sucn ireajts, i cannot think of speaking to such funny looking dolls and I am sure, Henrietta, you will not think of doing so either. Henrietta doll said they were too old for her to think of bothorlnr with. For her part she could not spend her time with folks who were not up to date. The next day when the little girl csme to play with her toys her grandmother said: "I do not think you care for my dolls or you would not have left them on tha floor last night. I think I had better take them back to the attic." "They are too old-fashioned, ftrandma Great," said tho littla girl.
