McDonald, Attorney f-r li Montague street, Brooklyn, New York. J3 3w WHY HE OPPOSES MONORAIL Mr. Gross Says It Is Because Wants No More Elevated Structures. He To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: May I ask space lor the following as ny last word on the Monorail question? Only to-day my attention was called to more letters In Monday issue ot me Eagle In response to mine of last week. Just why all your correspondents believe that my objections were directed against the Behr Monorail system, as such, I do not know.

I or I ought to say we, for there are many of us object to an elevated railroad in general. If one must be built, let it be the Behr Monorail, as probably the smaller of the evils. I am by no means wholly ignorant 01 this system, but do not know its merits over other similar ODes, and have so Btated In my letter, and not as quoted by discourteous correspondent. I would say In reply to C. O.

pencil letter that I have not seen the model, but seeing it could not possibly change my view. I have the advantage of having observed and studied the real thing, the building of the first elevated roads and their effect upon adjacent property. For years there were miles of vacant dwellings along the Fulton street and blocks of them along the Fifth avenue Some owners who were wise enough to withhold their consents recovered damages In the courts. 8ome of the larger property holders on Fifth avenue were bankrupted on account of their inability to get tenants, and these were men who reasoned the same as Mr. Fen-cil does now.

In the course of time, as the city became more and more congested, the dwellings gradually filled up, but I venture to say, could the elevated roads be put underground, the dwellings would at once become more desirable and values would go up. Mr. Fencil has not been correctly Informed when he was told that the Fulton etreet was first to be built on Atlantic avenue. I have specially mentioned the Coney Island traffic in my letter because the Monorail advocates have made much ot this to impress the public, and also be cause I think this is the only feature of the proposed railroad which will be a success. When people can travel for 5 cents from Manhattan to Coney Island they will not mind an excursion on a steamboat across the East To another correspondent, Dr.

Junor, I am beholden for the good opinion he has of me. I likewise think that I "have a high sense of protecting and aiding the rights of my fellow citizens," and will therefore never propose building an elevated railroad in front of their properties. I am also grateful for the information that there "are laws protecting the rights of presumably the citizens living along the route of the Monorail are Included. Mr. MacSaurln's letter I have preserved for possible use before the commissioners.

It 1b an efficient argument against the Monorail with Its ferry connection. This man knowingly allows his wife and daughters (If he has any) to expose themselves to the danger of being maimed for life in the bridge crush rather than use ferry, of which there are a number to select from! It is Just as the Eagle stated In an editorial a few days ago. You cannot coerce people to use a ferry In place of the bridge. The tunnel proposition between Manhattan and the Monorail on this side surely need not at present be considered. As some of the letter writers have made how I get to Manhattan, let me Inform them that in order to save time I Tibs the Court street car across the bridge, unless my objective point on the other side is near the ferry; then I use Bouth Ferry, also to save time, but often Jon't.

JULIUS A. GROSS. 176 Atlantic avenue, July 18, 1907. CHILDREN OF GOD. Kev.

Dr. Barnes Thinks Maine Critic of Brooklyn Man Is Confused, Too. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: The mind of your Maine Biblical student, who, in your Issue of the 15th, accuses Mr. Latham ot confusion, seems really to need deliverance therefrom. Much which he says is clear and true; In other parts of his letter he overlooks important statements of Christ and Important records of the evangelists.

The basic error is in assuming that the created likeness of man to God is the likeness of child to parent. Creationship Is less than fatherhood. This implies begetting and birth. So we are taught that "as many as received Him to them gave He power to become sons of God." It is really only the spiritual likeness which he speaks of that is entitled to the name "sons of God." In His controversy with the Jews, in John vili, when the Jews said "We have one father, even God," He replied, "If God were your Father ye would love Me," and then, later. He said, "Ye are of your father, the devil." The denial that God is their father and the assertion that they are of their father, the devil, seems to make clear that the terms "children of God" or "sons of God" are only by a very strange and marked contusion of thought applied to them.

The attempt to make the "Lord's Prayer," as it is commonly, but mistakenly, called, buttress the weak argument for the universal sonshlp of man to God, falls. Bro. Hervey needs only to read the opening verses of Luke xl, and read the occasion which drew out this "model prayer." to see that it Is distinctly the "disciples' prayer," as taught by the Lord, and in this sense only should it be thought of as the Lord's prayer. "And as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his decl-ples said unto him, 'Lord, teach us also to and he said unto them, 'when ye pray say 'Our etc. This a disciple could do, for God Is the Father of all disciplP3.

The petitions of the prayer are petitions Implying dlsclpleship character. "Hallowed be thy name" is not the honest or true utterance of a profane man; "Thy kingdom come" cannot be the honest utterance of a man who has rejected from the throne of his heart the King Jesus. "Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven" Is a fitting petition for the man who seeks to know and purposes to do the will of God, but is false on the lips of one who has no heart to do his will and does not practically attempt to do it. Surely we need to be delivered from mental confusion. Sonshlp to God and brotherhood among all men Is the goal to which the gospel and the grace of God point us.

To start with the assumption that we are children of God is to make a mistaken start, and compels us to positions which contradict decided utterances of Christ. H. W. BARNES. Binghamton, N.

July 16, 1907. P. S. I am profited by, and pleased with many things you give us in the Monday Issues. They are good contributions to genuine religious thinking, and to right religious convictions.

At the end of fifty-two years work In the ministry I have an abounding faith In the ultimate victory of truth and In the triumph of Christ; but I confess myself under debt to humanity to aid In the victory, and, believing that I see many things clearly, and broadly, I frequently write. This is what has prompted me to pen the above. H. W. B.

VACATION AND SUNDAY. To the Editor ot the Brooklyn Eagle: During August a large majority of the employes In stores and other places of business take their vacation of one, two or three weeks. As a national organization, representing fourteen leading de- nominations, we speak in behalf of the millions of Christian people in this matter. It has occurred to many ot our Christian people who are laboring to conserve our Christian American Sabbath that the employers in our land could add much Influence to uphoid the Sabbath by heeding the suggestion following; Usually the employes leave on Saturday, sometimes Saturday afternoon, for their vacation. Let every employe be gracious enough to say to those in his service tnat they can have Monday for return travel from their vacations, and thus avoid temptation or suggestion to travel on Sunday.

No business man would appreciably miss the service of any employe for one extra day and each could begin his or her labors on Tuesday morning. Also, not a few now have their employes leave the store, or office, on Friday night, that they may have all day Saturday for travel to their resting place for the vacation, as usually there is but half a day of business on Saturday. It is sincerely hoped that this practical suggestion will be carried out by many thousands of business men who may read these lins. FREDERICK J. STANLEY, General Secretary, American Sabbath Union.

July. 17, 11)07. OFFICIALS DEFENDED. Says Hempstead Authorities Were Compelled to Put a Stop to Motor Speeding. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: Between time-takers and auto-speeders there will always be a difference of opinion as to speeding, and the stop watches never varied more than last Sunday through the village limits of Hempstead.

It is two years since any action has been taken in reference to a 40-mlle clip through the streets. The trustees are slow to wake up, but complaints have snowed them under lately, and they had to act. There are some bad corners in the village, and local offenders have been criticised sharply. Pedestrians have taken crossings at. a skip or a run, and even the mail carriers declare they are obliged to Jump for their lives half the time, and keep on the lookout all the time.

It has been suggested that the doctors' gas wagons carry ambulance gongs or the labol "Business Promoter," so careless have these professional gentlemen become. Possible accidents their drivers make probable. If the A. A. A.

believes that Its members act within speed limits on village streets, why did they post their men on Sunday, warning autolsts to observe the law? The village rule is "not to exceed ten miles," but five more are "allowed, and no one should find fault with riding at that rate for four minutes. Only one of the owners of machines pleaded "not guilty" on Sunday. No village is hunting trouble with tourists, but when the latter have the enjoyment of the prefect roads that have been oiled to allay the dust this endless procession ot automobiles stir up, the taxpayers who foot the bills have a right to call out their authorities and compel law-breaking autolsts to slow down through the village streets. As It now is, the majority of machines rush by the signs with no perceptible slackening of speed. Hempstead Is too affluent to put up any play for extra money In her coffers, but the fine Is now the only way to check what has become a menace to public Bafety, and which is growing worse every week.

Rarely is the warning note of a horn heard, and the trolley men look out for motors. Instead of vice versa. Of course, when the pocketbook is touched there is bluster, but it Is better than an accident, and these autolsts ought to realize it is their own fault. They travel through fast when they can, slow only when they must. Hempstead Is now one of the "must" villages.
