The 22,000 teachers of the public school! are affected by action of the Board of Superintendent, which haft adopted a plan by which they will receive refunds of salary deducted for absence on account of nines, more promptly than in the past.

This action wag brought about by the large amount of sick cub at the present time and to remove that cause for worry from the minds of sick teachers. Hereuftcr one member of the local board, with the district superintendent, will par on applications for re-luniiH us soon as filed. The children released them from the roof, and watched them as they flew toward the north. Before the morning was over a telephone message announced the receipt of the message in New Kochelle. FIRST INSTITUTE RECITAL May Peterson Sings Delightful Program-Pianist at Aeolian.

Brooklyn's music season was officially' opened la-st evening when, under the auspices of the Institute, May Peterson, soprano, gave a song recital In the music hall of the Academy. Hecause of the influenza epidemic not so large an audience as is usual at Institute -events greeted the singer, but those who did brave' the danger of infection, either real or imaginary, were amply rewarded: for Miss Peterson was in good voice and sang an interesting list of songs. "She fftar-Spangled Banner" opened the recital and then, as is the time-honorett custom, the singer began with a group of classic compositions that included an old Italian Canzone by Clampi, the old French "Chante, Kossignol," nn old Scotch setting of the poem of Burns, "Oh, Whistle, an' I'll Come to Ye, My Lad," and the "Allelujah1' f-om Mozart's Exsultate. There followed a group of modern French songs, among them Debussy's "Noel des enfants qui n'ont plus de maisons" (expressing the longing of the homeless and fatherless children of Franco for a Christmas gift of "revenge" upon their enemy, the Hun); another of Russian songs in EjiKlish texts, and a final group of songs by contemporary American composers. Francis Moore furnished able accompaniments.

Miss Peterson's art does riot carry with it any great emotional message, but it is of that exquisite objective sort that, partaking of the qualities of intelligence, excellent diction (particularly in the French group) command of vocal technique and style, furnishes a purely esthetic delight. Within definite limits prescribed by the emotional limitations inherent In the color and range of her vocal equipment she encompassed a variety of moods ranging from the archness of the old Scotch melody to the quiet contem-plativeness of Widor's "Contempla tion." Particularly happy is Miss Peterson in the interpretation of the lighter aspects of sentiment. Hers is primarily an art that appeals because of its sincerity and Its intelligent delivery. An insufllclency of programs obliged the singer to announce Her songs in their order, and in doing so she supplied her audience with some information regarding their history and content. Undoubtedly the experiment was a happy one; at least it placed UlB audience in a more ap- theirs without Miss Peterson's explan atory prefaces.

Another Pianist in coital. In the afternoon, at Aeolian Hall, Grace Holhelmer. pianist, gave a recital. In the opening sonata for two pianos, by Mozart, she had th assistance of Andre Benoist. For tlJ rest her program included the arrangement of the Bach Organ prelude and Fugue In A minor, a group of Schumann, and one of Albeniz, Spalding and Ilrahms.

Miss Hof-heimer, who has devoted her time to teaching, possesses an abundant technique and a straightforwardness of interpretation, but throughout the list yesterday there was an Inflexibility, almost a mechanical lack of variety of tone and color, that precluded the expression of the inner essence of the compositions.
