A special Invitation to property owners and others vitally interested in Long Island real estate to ally themselves with the Long Island Real Ettate Board as sustaining and associate members has just been issued by Granville If. Rome, general chairman of the current membership campaign of that organization. It is pointed out by Mr. Rome and the officers of the board that, while the organization is primarily a brokers' body, It cannot fight its own legislative and civic battles without automatically protecting the inter-related interests of the property owner.

"The best evidence of the proper')-owners' need of protection of this kind Is to be found In the fact that, cf 3.000 bills introduced in the last esslon of the Legislature. 500 of them fleeted real estate directly or indirectly. When I sav that these bills fleeted real estate I do not refer sx-cluslvely to real estate brokers; I mean also the interests of the property owner and other businesses and professions associated with real estate. Neither do I say that all of these bills were bad. Nevertheless, tome recognized body had to examine every one of these bills and take appropriate action on them.

The body vhich did this work was the legislative committee of our Board. "There la a ateadily growing trend the present time toward excessive legislative Interference with all business and particularly with real esta'e. Added taxation on real estate Is tfie first thing the average legislator thinks of whenever there is a revenue shortage. In fact, there are some theorists in our own State who would have all taxation levied upon real (state. "Because of this trend, the Board In its present membership campaign is endeavoring not only to increase Its broker strength but is also Inviting property owners to come in as sustaining members and other allied businesses and professions, such as architects, builders and engineers to Join as associates." Mr.

Rome announced that the formal opening of the membership campaign would occur on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Garden City Hotel. At that time more than 100 brokers from all parts of the Island, and a goodly number of property owners, will assemble for the Initial dinner rally of the membership effort. Silliman was poising his pen over the contract th broker again asked whether it was not true that the property had been In the possession of his family for many decades. An awkward pauso ensued, at the end of which Mr. Silliman pushed the contract aside and said: "Yes. it has. And I've decided to own it awhile longer." On a later occaslrm Mr.

Silliman toid a broker to cover the site with sliver dollars and he could have it. The building then was foil stories heljht. The broker at once employed a mathematician to figure that proposition out and then went In to Mr. Silliman to take him up on his offer. The aged owner asked him how he intended to lay the dollars and the broker said: "Horizontally, of course." "I thought so." replied Mr.

Silliman. "but that won't do! They must be laid perpendicularly." The sale was not In 1905 the estate of Mr. silnmA fold the property to a syndicate of fit. Louis business men headed by Festus J. Wade, president of the Mercantile Trust Company of that city.

Mary In 1926 the building was sold by William Ziegler its vner, lor tna price of $1,500,000. When Mr. Sillimin 'uis-vd away In January. 1901, says Mr. Edgcccube, the corner plot was valued at Three years before his death.

Mr. Silliman entertained several oilers of purchase. It is rclnted that a certain downtown broker had contracts drawn which would have transferred the corner to other interests. He sat In the office of the owner, then 93 vears old, and watched him prepare ti sisn the contract. It was the largest drail this broker had ever brought to that exeitlna- and he was brim full of happiness and some degree oi nervousness.
