7 (An Cuban air men believed today that Capt. Frank M. Hawks, who breakfasted yesterday in New York and dined last evening in Havana, had ict a record for flight between the two cities which will be hard to beat. Setting out from Cuniss Field, Long Island, at 8:50 a.m. Captain Hawks flew southward along the Atlantic seaboard and.

crossing to uuDa from tne Florida peninsula, arrived here at 6:11 just nine hours and 21 minutes after his departure. He estimated that, allowing for a 25-mile headwind, he averaged almost 182 miles an hour fcr the trip, for which he used a small mystery monoplane bearing the name "13." His actual flying time was 8 hours and 38 minutes. There were two stops en route, one of 23 minutes at Jacksonville and one of 20 minutes at Miami. He beat by nearly five hours the previous- record of 14 hours set March 5, 1928, when the late Wtlmer Stultz carried Charles Levine and Miss Mabel Boll, "Queen of Diamonds," there in a non-stop trip In the airplane Columbia. A large crowd gathered in the lowering dusk at Curtlss Airport, or General Machado Field, as it is also known, to witness Hawks' arrival.

He was almost over them before his plane was sighted, traveling at what seemed a phenomenal speed. Hawks said he probably would re turn to New York Saturday and might attempt to establish a) new time record on the return flight. Let me run the gamut over; Let me fight and love and laugh. And when I'm laid beneath the clover Let this be my epitaph: Here lies one who took his chances In this busy world of men; Battling luck and circumstances, Fought and fell and fought again: Won sometimes, but did no crow ing; Lost sometimes, but did not wail: Took his beating, but kept going; Never let his courage fall. He was fallible and human. Therefore loved and understood Both his fellow men and women, Whether good or not so good; Kent his spirit undiminished, Never lay down on a friend, Played the game until the finish. Was a real man to the end.
