Th extent of real estate activity in Brooklyn is indicated by the number of paper recorded in the register' office, which have Just been compiled by Register Webster of Kings County. During the first three months of the year the Kings County office handled more than four times as many papers as New York County and nearly six times as many as Bronx County. The greatly Increased figures for April In-dicate that these ratios will grow larger as the year progresses. During tho month of April, Just closed, Register Webster received for record 4,941 deeds, 4,882 mortgages, 1,743 satisfactions and 73 miscellaneous papers, a total of 11,638 documents. This Is an increase of nearly 32 per cent, over the March business, which totaled 8,822 papers, and an increase of 94 per cent, over the business of April last year when 6,996 papers were recorded.

The total number of- papers for the first four months of this year is 33,446, as compared with 19,692 for the same period last year, an increase of 77 per cent. These figures show the office to be busier now than at any time since the boom year of 1906, when the figures were slightly larger. Chattel mortgage business has not increased in the same proportion as the rush of real estate papers, but this department also has been busy. There were 4,618 chattel mortgages filed last month as compared with 4,023 for the same month last year. The total for the first four months is i 17,188 as compared with 15,001 for the same period last year.

In the meantime the office has become not only self-supporting but extremely profitable for the taxpayers. The receipts for the month Just past were 833,950.72, the largest in the history of the office. The total receipts for the first four months this year were 898,795.68. also a new high rec ord for the office. The total expenses of the office for the four months were 873,929.78, leaving a surplus In the city treasury of 824,865.90 clear profit to the taxpayers tnus lar mis yeur.

'These figures do not include the mortgage taxes collected by the register. The mortgage tax department of the office has also been extremely busy. The taxes collected last month were 854,885, as compared with in April of last year. The total for the first four months is as compared with $63,386.62 for the same period last year. The mortgage taxes thus far this year are the largest which the office has collected since 1910.

Taxes were collected on 3,076 papers last month, making a total of 7,677 thus far this year, as compared with 3,637 for the same period last year. In commenting on these figures. Register Webster said: very important fact must be kept in mind by ail who have to do with the Kings County Register's of- fice. It is that for the first time in a generation the office is trying to operate without any money for extra copyists. I am receiving far more papers than my predecessor received at.

any time during his six years in office and yet he averaged nearly $18,000 per year for extra copyists, while I have not one cent for this purpose. This situation Is due to the belief of the budget makers last fall that wartime conditions would continue this year. Our budget is a war budget and peace conditions are swamping us. Every day's business In papers sufficient to keep our regulur copying force employed for from two to three days. Every day makes the congestion worse.
