JUNE 20. 1914. DEGREES FOR FOURTEEN NUNS Sisters of St. Joseph and St. Dominic and Seven Priests Honored by St.

John's SIX GRADUATES IN 1914 CLASS. LL.D. Degrees for Mgr. Kaupert, Attorney General Carmody and W. Bourke Cockran.

Fourteen nuns received degrees last night at the annual commencement of John's College, at fortythe Academy of Music. None of the nuns were present to receive their degrees in person, as the rules of the various orders forbid it, but the Rev. John W. Moore, C.M., president of the college, announced the awarding the degrees for the successful completion of various courses of studies at the college by the nuns. Five members of the Order of the Sisters of St.

Joseph received degrees of bachelor of arts, and three members of the same society received the degree of master of arts. The master of arts degree was conferred on six members of the Order of Sisters of St. Dominic, and on seven of the priests of the diocese. St. John's College graduated six young men as its forty-fourth class, conferring on them the degree of bachthe opera house of the Academy, which elor of arts.

The exercises a were held in was taxed to its capacity by the audience. The degrees were conferred by the president of the college, the Rev. John W. Moore, C.M., and the exercises were presided over by the Rt. Rev.

Bishop George W. Mundelein, D.D.; W. Bourke Cockran delivered the address to the graduates. The commencement orations were delivered by Daniel J. McParland, whose subject was "Free John P.

O'Hara, whose subject was "Ethics of War," and George J. Crane, whose subject was "Orthodoxy." During the exercises the college orchestra, under the direction of T. Bath Glasson, played "Raymond" (Thomas), "March Military" (Schubert), (Dvorak), "Evening Star," from "Tannaheuser," and "Rakoczy" (Berlioz). Honorary degrees of doctors of law were conferred on the Rt. Rev.

Mgr. Kaupert, V.G.; Thomas Carmody, Attorney General of the State of New York, and W. Bourke Cockran. Seated on the platform with the graduates and speakers of the evening were a number of clergy of the diocese and many of the alumni of the college. The graduates of the commercial course of the college, fourteen in number, were also awarded their diplomas last night, and the prizes and honors won by the students in the various classes were publicly bestowed.

"The Apostolate of the Catholic Laity" was the subject of the address to the graduates delivered by William Bourke Cockran, LL.D. He urged upon the young men the importance of their taking an active part in the things in which the Church is interested, saying that the real test of their loyalty to the Church was to be found in the manner in which they responded to her calls for their co-operation. "There are many evils that the Church is combatting at the present time," said Mr. Cockran, "some of which are intimately connected with the stability of the Republic. Doctrinaires are offering their false theories on the rights of man and forgetting the prime fact that every right involves a duty.

Socialism, with its vain promises of wonderful advancement to all, is making converts every day. Agitators are arousing the man in the street to a state of discontent, and evil forces are everywhere at work. In all turmoil the Church stands practically alone in the fiela. "There is a wonderful chance offered you young men to prove yourselves worthy of the trust she places in you. The clergy have long borne the brunt of the battle.

The time is now ripe for the formation of a strong apostolate of the laity. Unite with your Church in her efforts for the common good. The truth is all powerful, and with the weapons placed in your hands by your teachers, you should gO forth from your college ready to do battle, if necessary, with the forces that would destroy our Christian civilization. Be ready always to stand up for the principles that you have learned, for they are the right principles. If you do this, you will shed luster on yourselves and your Church, and you will prove yourselves worthy of the trust that she reposes in you." The six participants had done the best work the Cup Debates during the term. Three questions were discussed, one fellow speaking for and another against a problem. James Brown maintained that "The Philippine Islands Should Be Made, Independent from the United George Hefferman arguing against it. Abraham Alexander spoke on the affirmative of the question, "Resolved, to a single six-year Albert That the Presidential term' be changed Schlactus opposed him. The third proposition was, "Resolved, That President Wilson's policies toward Mexico are the best." David Cunnison upheld the President's attitude, while Silas Besthoff debated, against it.

Brown awarded first placo; Besthoff, second, and Cunnison, third. The prizes consisted of points toward a G. O. literary medal. Several members of the staff of the Ledger, Commercial's monthly publication, paid a visit yesterday morning to Public School No.

172. Warren M. Van Name, its principal, who prior to his appointment was the faculty advisor of the 1 Ledger, welcomed the editors. An entertainment was given by the Commercialites in the assembly room, and included: 3 "A Boy's Composition on by Edgar R. Thiess; "The Owl Critic," a recitation by Dewey Pinsker; "Signor Sapinelili at the Baseball Game," a recitation by Salvatore Marinello, and "The Adventures of Sherlock Jones," a reading by Leonard Mandel.

Walter Zeydel of the Ledger was also present. In return for the treat which the high school boys had given them, the students of 172 sang a number of songs, so the morning was thoroughly enjoyed. LAST RITES FOR McLAUGHLIN Military Honors Paid at Grave of Well-Known Brooklynite Funeral services for J. Louis Kays McLaughlin, husband of Mary Marriott and son of the late Hugh and Pauline Kays McLaughlin and a nephew of the late Hugh McLaughlin, were held last night at his late residence, 1815 Brooklyn avenue. The house was thronged with friends and relatives, who gathered at the bier to pay their final respects.

The drawing-room, where the casket rested, was turned into a flower garden. Ivy wreaths and other floral pieces were gifts of the Spanish War Veterans, the Tambo Social Club, Bergen Beach Yacht Club and other organizations of which the deceased was a member. The Rev. George Swan, rector of St. Matthew's P.

E. Church of Bay Ridge, officiated at the services. Eight choir boys of St. John's P. E.

One of the special features of the services was the draping of the coffin with the national colors, with impressive ceremonies, held under the auspices of the veterans. Interment took place this morning, at Greenwood Cemetery.

A squad of soldiers fired a salute over the grave of their deceased comrade as his remains were being lowered. The deceased was a member of the Fourteenth and Twenty-third regiments and other military organizations, all of which were represented at the funeral services. His only surviving son is Hugh McLaughlin. Among the well-known friends of the deceased present at the services were Marchioness Ellen McLaughlin, Stephen McKeever, Edward McKeever, L. W.

BENNETT. Pastor Clifford Officiates at Funeral of Dead Supervisor. Funeral services were held this afternoon for the late William V. B. Bennett at his late residence, 929 Kings Highway.

Only the immediate family attended the services and accompanied the body to Greenwood Cemetery, where the interment was made. The Rev. Philip H. Clifford, pastor of the Gravesend Reformed Church, officiated at the service, and while he did not eulogize, dwelt upon the simple presentation of the Biblical truth concerning the life beyond the grave. In a letter to The Eagle, Mr.

Clifford requested the publication of the following tribute to Mr. Bennett: A LOVING TRIBUTE. In the death of William V. B. Bennett, Supervisor of Gravesend.

treasurer of the old Gravesend Reformed Church, friend and counselor of the poor, one of the humble, great men of the day, Brooklyn has sustained a great loss. Mr. Bennett was honorable, just and true, A perfect Christian gentleman, a real friend, having that virtue which never sacrifices principle, but in love sacrifices self for right. for friends, for those who needed his help. He had ancestors, among whom were men and women of the good old Dutch stock, havIng character, love and spiritual amuence, but he himself is an ancestor.

He was a man who was concerned with the Infinite concern of making a life rather than a living. By his death a great void has been created in our chuch. As his pastor, I loved him, and I am a better man for having known him. He hated shams above all things, but he belleved in the true and the real and he practiced the presence of God. In his death I have personally suffered a great loss, but trust God will raise up another whose advice will help me as much as his in the great work of the ministry, PHILIP H.

The June exhibit of vegetables and flowers by the School Garden Clubs of Public School No. 129, Gates avenue, near Lewis, was held yesterday afternoon in the auditorium of the building and was much admired by fond parents and friends of the school. It was, perhaps, one of the best exhibits of the kind ever held in a Brooklyn school, and the principal, Dr. Edward 1 P. Crowell, who originated the scheme last year, was much pleased.

A bronze medal and 122 other prizes were awarded. There are thirty-four garden clubs with a membership of 982 pupils in this school, and nearly every member entered the contest. It was with considerable effort that the judges, Dr. Crowell, Miss Ellen Eddy Shaw of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Miss Jennie E. Rodell and Mrs.

F. F. Purdy of the local school board, made the awards. One of the conditions was that every exhibit must have been grown from seed planted this season. Most of the seeds had been provided by Dr.

Crowell, through the co-operation of Park Commissioner R. V. Ingersoll and Congressman Herman A. Metz. Miss Sylvia Warren presented the medals, and District Superintendent Veit made an address.

The plants grown from these seeds were conveyed to the school building yesterday in almost every sort of receptacle. There were pots, pans, boxes and tubs, and in them about every sort of spring vegetable and flower that springs from seed. There were beans and peas ready to be picked, corn stalks two feet high, radishes and lettuce ready for the table, tomato plants in blossom, peanut and pumpkin vines. The flower specimens included sweet William, pinks and marigolds in blossom, sunflowers that would soon bud, lady slippers, holly hocks and daisies, in fact, few, if any, were missing. And when the visitors had viewed all these they were invited to view the splendid garden planted and cared for by the kindergarten children under the direction of the teachers, Miss Willa Hagerman and Miss Edna Marschalk.

This was located in the rear yard of a Mrs. Wood, living next door to the school property, who had kindly turned it over to the little folks. It was the general opinion of the visitors that the exhibit was a splendid one- a nature study worth while. Next September there will be an exhibit of fall vegetables and fruits in this school, when a silver medal will be awarded as the chief prize. The bronze medal yesterday was awarded to Emily Moran.
