Percent, Deposits -17 Percent, in a Year. In the yearly period ended June 30, 192G, the date of the lust call made by the New Tork State Department of Banking showing the conditions of the banks. Long- Island Stats banks and tut companies also under State charter, showed remarkable advances. The figures for the entire group of 8tats banks were recently mado available by the State banking, department. A study of the banks located on Long Island shows large gains in resources, loans and i discounts and irw deposits.

Loans and discount or all the banks showed the largest percentage gain, 19 percent, between June 80, 1124, and June 30, 1925. Deposits in the banks and trust companies during the period grew over 17 percent, while total resources Increased 16 percent. Total resources of the banks as of the data of the bank call on Juno 30 were $71,822,559, compared with $61,153,032 last year. Inang and discounts totaled $25,959. 111.

against Iel.l.lli0, wlille depoelta mere compared with Si 3.765.-938 a year ago. The totals given are, of course, ex-clostv of the masy National banks on the Island, the figure) of which are not made available by the I'om-tolle of the Cuency, who controls tbem. The figures Include only banks and trust companies In Nassau and Suffolk 'counties and do not Include Queens and Kings counties, which ara generally considered under the htad ot New York and Brooklyn banks. Examination of tho figures reveals that the large Increase In populntlon of th suburban communities has been reflected In the bank totals. Most of the large Individual hank gains are found In communities where building activity has been large and where many new families have settled.

Contrariwise decreases are found In the small, older communities which have not been greatly affected by the realty boom. The great building activity in many parts of the two counties has swelled the loans and disrounts column in comparison with th resources and deposits of th bunks. The reports ot the bank and trust companies as of June 10. 1924, and June 10, 1925, were as follows: John y. McOowan, Home Tile Cement Company, Kugene Somvtag, Martin V.

Glck, Anton Muller, John not especially concerned with price fluctuations. Brooklyn KiIIhoii. I wrote you several months ngo for a'Ulse on llrooklyn Kdlson stock and to sell It or not. You told me to hold It, but now It has risen further. Do you think 1 should hold il lotiKur or sell It now? I H.

A. Continue to hold the stock. When 1 udvtsed you to hold th stock some months ago, the advlc was not based on prescience of an upward movement In the price of the stock, but rather on the company' excellent earnings, financial strength and possibilities of growth. Thcj are tho fictors that make a strung common stock Investment, and as long ss they continue, the stock 1 a good on to hold. You should not worry over price fluctuations.

That Is, speculation. see Brigs; thxly After Dividend Cut. Purchased Kriggs jfunufadurintt Company stock some time ago above 1 40 a share. It I now soiling below I0 and the dividend has been cut in hslf. 1 am not Inclined to tak my loss unless the company Is actually In serious difficulties Can you give me any information on this subject? A.

A. A. Reduction of the Brlggs Manufacturing Company dividend was made necessary by a decline In earnings, figures for the half year ehow-uK little more than 2 a share as compared with 15.67 a share in' all of 1924. Kqultles for ths stock are sflghily less than $15 a share, so that the Issue Is primarily an "earning power" stock. Ther la no reason to become alarmed over the situation on the basis of Information avail' able, eirept possibly rumors of heavy losa of business.

The latter, however, has formally denied by the company. The company ts In good shsp financially with plenty of working capital, no funded deb', and no bank loans. Its price may go lower, depending largely on the general slock market, but at present prices It has largely discounted the dividend reduction. Tote, William Kasper, William Bach, James A. J- Sept, J9 re is nothing to fear from radl- Ism provided the great mass of American people have a true rcrstandlng of th essentials ot Uness and government, Lewis E. chairman of the board of he Irving Bank-Columbia Trust Company, New York, declared in an KldreKs this morning before the invention of the American Bank- Association, Mr. Pterson as Irman of the Fiftieth Annler-v Committee, reviewed a half tiny of banking, outlining the it liitlon a plans for eommemorat- onipletlon of Its fiftieth year by 'iwlng college scholarships and faith In economics In every Btato the Union.

For fifty years the American nkers Association has been strlv- to spread a 'knowledge of bank-'and business fundamentals not illy among the banking profession fnit also among all good cltiaens. "That contribution Is to be ex pressed In the establishment of Foundation Scholarships, which will give to the students of our colleges Increased opportunity for education In noiind economics. Reviewing the progress In busl-nesa and government during the last BO years, Mr. I'lerson asserted that the history of the Bankers Assoclu-tloimnd of American banking during that period have run a similar course.

"To keep pace with changes It has been essential for the banks to ao-commodnte themselves to the necessities of Industry, and to expand from purely domestic banking to the wider field of International finance," ho suld. "The banks of the United Htatea during tho past half 'Century have met and solved every banking problem with which the country has been confronted. The resumption of Bpecle payment, the establishment ot the gold standard, the creation of the Federal Reserve Hyarem and tho enunciation of the banking policies which carried us, safely through the Btraln of the World War and the difficulties of post-war deflation are outstanding accomplishments." Mr. Pierson said the plan devel-oped by the Fiftieth Anniversary Committee was to obtain 60 subscriptions of 15,000 eVh so as to provide 60 scholarships or one for eaeh state and territory, and also to have a general solicitation based on state quotas according, to banking capital In each state for an additional $260,000 providing for fifty additional scholarships.
