fiturge 9-6061. first Bay Ridgeites we refer to the Indians, who lived here long before the Europeans ever aet foot on this beautiful island. There are none of their descendants among us today and even their names have almost completely disappeared from this locality. That there were Indians here we positively know. Hendrlck Hudson In 1609 spoke of the natives coming out in canoes to met his ship "The Halve Moon" when he entered the bay.

When the Dutch came to settle New Utrecht, of which town Bay Ridge is a part, they bought all the land from the Indians for "six shirts, two pairs of shoes, six pairs of stockings, six adzes, six knife. two cissors and six cobs." This land was known as "The Nyack Tract" because of the Nyack Indians who dwelt at what is now about Fort Hamilton. The Dutch in New Utrecht had no trouble with the Indians as their dealings were fair and the red men in return treated them in like manner. In 1679 there were Indians living on the beach at what is now about 28th St. and 3d Ave.

They rented the land from Simon De Hart whose house and farm were located at this point. This place was known as Gowanas. probably named for an Indian chief of the tribe. The Indians made their living by fishing, hunting, acting as guides, etc. The fishing was an extremely good occupation as the waters of the Bay were filled with fish of all kinds such as whales, tunnies, propoises and especially shell fish.

The oysters were, according to many of the old reports, a foot in lenKh. These were gathered and after the shell had been removed were pickled, packed in casks and exported to the West Indies. Pickled oysters remained a luxury and delicacy for many lears and no wedding repast was considered complete without them. Upon the arrival on Long Island, the Dutch found trails which the Indians had used for ears. They made no roads, except to widen these trails by their cart-wheels.

The main trail followed the present Fulton St. tc Flatbush then ran along about our Flatbush Ave. to Kings Highway, at which point four or five paths crossed, and here was found an Indian village. At about 5th and Flatbush a branch trail left the main one and ran southerly along 5th Ave. to about 14th St.

Here It turned west and went to the waterfront, which is our present 3d Ave. It then followed the shore to Fort Hamilton. It was on this trail at about 28th St. and 3d Ave. that the Indians spoken of above lived.

Indian Village a Sunset Park There was another trail through South Brooklyn, which ran along our present 6th Ave. through Greenwood, so through Sunset Park and along 8th Ave. to Fort Hamilton. I nrecent years an Indian village site was located in Sunset aPrk at the Water Pont and near by at 37th St. and 6th Ave.

objects were unearthed which Indicated Indians had dwelt there. At Fort Hamilton the tribe of In dians known as the Nyark dwelt, and the land on which they lived was known as the "Nyack Tract." In 1679 a vessel entering the harbor was met by two of these Indians, who had paddled out in their canoe to see the new arrivals. The passengers on board described these two, whom they afterwards saw living right here at our Fort Hamilton, as follows: "Duel of Comprehension, slow of speech, bashful but otherwise bold of person and red of skin. They wear something in front over the thighs and a piece of duffel like a blanket around the body and this Is all the clothing they have. Their hair hanks down from their heads In strings, well smeared with fat, and sometimes with quantises of little beads twisted in it out of pride.

They have hick Hps and thick noses, but not falling in like tongues and all of them black hair It was from the tribe, to which these Indians belonged, that Jaques Cortelyou had about twenty years before bought the Nyack tract. He had, aftr his purchase, allotted them a small piece of their former territory and here they lived at about what Is now 92d St. and 7th Ave. The two travelers, spoken of before as having arrived in Newj Netherlands 1679. made a Journey to Nyack in order to visit Jacques Cortelyou.

The dwelling was called Long House and old maps show four such Indian dwellings on the western end of Long Island, but the description of the one at Nyack or Fort Hamilton is the only one found In any of the old records.

This i uing Mouse, as aescnuea ty wese travelers, was very long. 15 feet wide and low. No floor except the i earth. The sides and roof were made of reed and the bark of chest- 1 nut trees. The pasts were limbs of trees stuck in the ground.

The ridge of the roof was open about a foot wide Irom one end tg the other calabash for water, which the travelers spoke of as being especially good here at Nyack (Fort Hamilton), a basket In which to keep his maige and beans and a knife. The food consisted of meat, such as venison, wild turkey, wild goose, fish, such as mentioned before: beans, known as Turkish beans, and a kind of bread made made of palze pounded In a block, by a stone, to a coarse meal. This was mixed with water and baked under the h.ot ashes. There were no beds. main ninop iti fnpn ihm except mats on which they slept at night each by his own fire with his feet toward it.

They sat on the ground or squated on their ankles. The squaws probably did most of the farming for which they had only a sharp stone for tilling the earth and sticks to meat their beans from the pods. They cerried their babies on their backs. The braves hunted and fished. Their canoes were made by hallowing out a tree trunk, these were often 40 feet long, with "no nail In any part of it." They paddled those with a kind of scoop.

These canoes had no mast or sails. When the travelers visited these Indians, they found some of the chiefs making shoes of deer leather, which they made soft and pliable by continually working with their hands. In this house lived the whole troop consisting of seven or eight families and about 22 people, among whom were the two Indians spoken of before, as going out to meet the boat as it entered the bay. In the Summer the Indians separated and lived in tents or in the open. Wampum TJied by Dutch For money they used wampum, this was made from shells.

There were two kinds, white and purple. The white was made from a clam shell, which was easy to obtain and so less valuable. The dark or purple came from the purple lining in the shell of a clam which buried itself in the sand and was generally found in deep water. This was equal in value to twice as much as the white. The wampum looked like polished beeds or discs and were strung on skin-cords.

Usually these cords of wampum were called fathoms and were supposed to equal the length the distance between the top of the little finger and the elbow. The Indians never sent a man with a long arm to pay a debt, but you can imagine a mighty long-armed brave sent to collect one. The Dutch used the Indian wampum as currency. It was used in much the same manner as tobacco was used in Virginia. It was accepted for payment of taxes and all court fees.

It was often put in the contribution boxes on Sunday. Here in Brooklyn there were two such places where warn- fpum was manufactured, one at Bergen Beach and one at Gerritsen Mill. Indiana Peaceful As said before, the Dutch here had very little trouble with the natives. There is one incident which shows how friendly they were. At one time there was a very "dear" time on Long Island No provisions could be obtained and of course the white man suffered.

He didn't know the best places to fish and. besides, he had to spend as much time as possible trying to cultivate the soil. Living here then there was an old Indian called by the Dutch "Jasper." He knew just where to catch the best fish, and every day when the Dutchman and his family returned from work in the fields or from a futile hunt for food, they would find fish, which Jasper had left on the Noor of their home and had gone on his way, not waiting for or expecting any thanks. Jasper was called after this "nig nit ap," which meant "my great friend." All the Indians on Long Island believed in spirits and had their priests and medicine men who had power to cast out evil spirits, which they thought possessed certain of their tribe. They believed there was a great and good God which they called "Sakemacker," who dwelt In heaven.

He thought and knew nothing but good and therefore he was not Interested in earthly things. Mrth and tbe Indians were!
