The Eagle has been supplied with the first news of the champion's early activities after landing. Mr. Hago writes: "Capablanca arrived in the port of Santos and was met by a committee of chess players and was brought to Sao Paulo by automobile through the most wonderful scenery in the world.

The distance is 54 miles. Sao Paulo Is situated on a plateau 2.500 feet above sea level, and the elevation rises over 2.300 feet in about six milesj out ol Santos, ine drive is Dcauiuul and Capablanca enjoyed it. "He played simultaneously in the Automovel Club of Sao Paulo on Aug. 15. His first performance was against 20 opponents, and he won 19 of the games and lost but one, to Enrico Penteado, chess editor of the Diario da Noite.

In the game Capablanca made two blunders. I did not play. "On Tuesday evening he gave his second exhibition at the Club Xadrez ao Sao Paulo, and on this occasion he met 24, winning 22 and drawing two. On Aug. 18 the champion played three consultation games against the best players in Sao Paulo, and won them all, none lasting more than 25 moves.

Capablanca was very well received, and all newspapers heralded bis coming on the first page, giving a good description of his record and past history." Hago has since asserted himself by scoring a handsome triumph over V. Romano, th.i champion of that citv. and repu'ed to be the best player in all Brazil. In a match of five games arranged by the Diario da Noite, Haeo won the first three games in succession That settled the affair in his favor and there was an end to it. ToUl 7 4 7 Sammy Finds It Hard. Sammy Reshevsky In 1924 missed his chance for second prize" in the Western championship tournament by losing his last game to N. T. Whit-aker, winner of the recent major tournament of the National Chess Federation. He fared no better with the On the Radio Bv BATES per radio are nearly I 1 always interesting, and when you hear a real live argument such as the one on the Dry-Wet issue, that we got last night, it becomes a real Joy to listen In.

The locale was 89 Hanson in our lair boro, and the arguers were Arthur Garfield Hays, on the Wet aide, and Orvllle S. Poland for the Prys. The Roebling Branch of the Von Steuben Society sponsored the debate, which went over the air through WOR and its sister station at South Dartmouth, Mass. The proceedings took about B0 minutes, and the fur fairly flew at times, though both speakers, most of the time, showed wonderful control of their emotions. One could almost hear each of the speakers think, and one could almont hear the words and phrases each had in mind, but which the rules of debating, and polite society kept from being uttered.

Mr. Hays was by far the snappiest of the two speakers. He was frankly as wet as a beaver on a rainy dav. Hr even ad mi Wed havmtf had a drink before coming to the meeting, thotinh he laughingly omitted mentioning where or when the ceremonv took place, Irst radio UsWners might per-np think he had a cellar that wjs and deep, come to make social or professional calls, Mr, Poland had the first and the lat word. His main argument seemed to be thrit alcohol a habit-forming drug, and that it Is therefore a menace; and that the enactment of the Constitutional Amendment was amply Justified, in that it means a furtherance of the idea of the "greatest good Jor the greaust number." Poland showed in his last five minutes that he ran fire up when he feels like It. and he even threw in a few harsh sounds that were in strane contrast to the velvety tones he had employed previously. There was no derision, the' chairman, Leo Kenneth Mayer, contenting himself with thanking the speakers for their able presentations. The listening public was urged to help decide the momentous question by postcard or letter. We had a genuine treat after the debate, listening to the group gathered by AuuiiAtus Barrett, at A P.

Mr. Barrett. Judging by hts voice and the wording of his announcements, is a gentleman of thP n)H school, cultured, refined and experi- enced. with a knowledge of how to gei up a program calculated to suit every radio taste. He started with a story of an Irishman and his horse, admirably told, with Just the nht touch of the real brotjue.

and then announced his "Melody and Ho-niance" program. Idelle Patterson was one of the principals, there being seven or eisht mrn and women, who, in solos and chorals, whiled awny a very pleasant half-hour. Even "i)eep River" did not sound so frayed at the edijes as it usually doe. and "1 Know a Unnk" and "Would Ood I Were a Tender Apple Blmn" were very fine. Indeed.

A little humor was injected by the sintrtng of "A Raw Hecruit From Butte" and "Ask Dnd. He Knows." which sounded like an Edrar Guest poern muslenlied.
