Dame Fortune will play a great pert in the little golf drama to bo staged at St. Louis, commencing this morning, called the "National Public Links Golf Championship," according to The Eagle's baseball authority. Thomas Holmes, who was recently in St. Louis with the Robins, played over the course. He gives his views on the course: "My golf is terrible.

So is my disposition, and this Forest Park course is partially responsible. 1 played over it this morning, taking about nine putts on each temporary green. "To make matters worse, it hasn't rained out here for a month, and the fairways are baked until they're cracked and as hard as concrete. The tournament ought to be a crazy affair. Here are a few notes on the course: "No.

1, 395 yards Fairly wide creek crosses fairway about 300 yards from tee. Takes a good drive and an accurately placed second to hold the green. "No. 2. 220 yards Should be a pipe.

Water carry in front of tee is only about 20 yards wide, but drive must be straight to shoot between two groves of trees on the ither bank, not far apart. "No. 3. 183 yards Another short water carry of about 90 yards. Green is on elevation rising from opposite bank.

If you don't reach the green there is some chance of your ball olonping back in the water, (Mine did.) "No. 4, 438 yards Sliced tee shot finds lagoon off fairway, which slopes sharply, from rough on right to the water. Blind green beyond hi-'h hill, lined on either side with woods. "No. 5.

488 yards Sharp dosr leg in left. Narrow fairway for drive, with out-of-bounds in road on left. "No. fl. 172 yards Cinch unless vou're down slope to left of green, is pHimb full of trees.

Aug. 6-Pete de Grasse of Jamaica, gained a close eight-round decision over Dodo Jackson, local favorite, here last night in the featured eight-round bout that headed the weekly boxing show. De Grasse accumulated a lead on points during the eight rounds.

Three of the four six-round bouts were awarded as technical knockout verdicts by Referee Jim Brooks. In these Jack Fiala of Brooklyn, stopped Joe Corbett of New York. In the second round; Andy Zazzi of Huntington, put a halter on Oeorge Bell of New York in the second stanza, and Jack Livingston ol Porto Rico, won over Gus Roden-berg of Germany, in a foreigners' alfair, when the latter insisted on making his rival a life rait. The fight was stopped in the fifth round after many warnings of illegal holding. In the opening six-spot Barney Baker stopped Fred Blount, while Larry Martensen put the snore on Billy Rhodebeck in the second ses-ion of a carded four-round curtain raiser.

Reason Dog-Leg Golf Hole Is Good How many golfers know a good hole when they see one? asked the Chicago Daily New. Here's a bit of information that has bleaned from T. J. Moreau of Mid-City, one of the leading golf architects in Chicago. It's about the whys and wherefores of dog-leg hoks.

"A dofj-lrg." declared Mr. Moreau. "i nearly always a good golf hole. And the reason is simple. A good golfer is never penalized and a poor one can play the hole without too much difficulty.

By shooting long hhot Just past the trap or hazard that guards the curve, the good player has an open shot to the green. "His ball ran carry 300 vards and Kill be rivht in the fairway at tiie bend. The duffer, on the othtr hand, will aUo get an otxm shut to the frrren if he keeps in the lttir way. His second shot, however, will have to be extra long and extra well placed to make the green. He probably will take three to get on.

"The point of a dog-leg. however. is that the player mutt make two legitimate shots to get on. A dubbed shot is always penalized And the trans do not need to be placed in the middle ox tne latrway, a condition which many times make a holu too ever lor duffer." LEAD MG SAMENESS BUT BERGJSjlllER Referee Intervenes in Fifth Round to Save Loser From Knockout. For the set-up he was supposed to be Joe Trabon of Kansas City proved himself a singular tough egg against Jack Kid Berg at the Dexter Park Arena last night.

Although he was finally knocked out in the fifth round the Kansas City fighter fought grimly and savagely until the finish. Then he was floored twice and was on his feet when the referee stopped the contest. Trabon held the pace with Berg from the beginning. He adapted himself to the Englishman's style, the tireless arm-swinging, and he never lagged. The end was not in sight until the fourth round was almost completed, when a premonition came when Trabon was floored for nine.

Berg's amazing stamina has been reported in the public prints before, so it needs no telling here that the customers knew what they expected of him. In Trabon, however, they were surprised. Trabon Stands By Grins. He stepped out in the first round and proceeded immediately to grasp the crowd's admiration by meeting Eerj at the EngUsnmans own game. He stood up ancl fought.

Berg led from the beginning but he was never ahead by too large a margin. His rushes were met by counter ones, his blows found land ing spots but his features acted as a delivery station for missies of a like sort. Little thought was given to body attacks. Both seemed to be possessed of overwhelming desires to rip each other's features Into shreds. Trabon threw Berg back on his heels in the third round with a left to the The ever rushing Berg was halted only for an instant.

Ho came in again and swarmed aroun the Westerner, flogging him incessantly. In the end Tiabon's legs betrayed him. They weakened under him and with this sustaining strength gone he was helpless. Four successive rijis to the jaw, each carefully laid him inert on his back the first time. But he arosn and continued fighting madly.

Referee Intervenes. The round didn't go long in ths fifth. Berg caught him in a corner and struck him down with another right to the jaw. This time Trabon fell face downward and he was covered with resin when he stood on two legs aiain. The ambitious Bers was on him again quickly an1 chopped him down with another blow.

Trabon pawed at the ground, hif eye3 wore glazed, but he seized a roue and struggled to bis feet. Tha relentless Berg came at him again, but now the third man in the rins intervened between victor and vanquished and the contest was over. Danny Levine and Joe Leoiw fought a hard six-round semi-final and Leone received tne decision. In the bout preceding this Marty RotLi hamered his way to an easy de-ct'sion over Georgie Reisler. In another tout Murray Kezd defeate-l Harry Friedman.

Rocco Vigna won on a knockout over Marty Mosco-witz in a six when the latter broke his hand or suTered some accident equally as serious in the fourtl. round. Attention is here called to Lew Farber. a former amateur champion who defeated Vincent Glionne 'in another affair. Farber fought well.

Baksr-Gans Melee at Qaeensboro Club Welterweights will fill the saddles In the main event at the Queens-boro Stadium tonight. Sammy Eater and Eaby Joe Oans will box in a scheduled ten-round bout and If you are credulous enough to believe the publicity department for the club the winner will meet Jackie Fields as Quickly as the thing can be arranged. Gans is certainly the best Negro welter prominent in the East at the present time. The black boy can and it is a pleasure to watch him. In Baker he is fpclnsr an in-and-outer.

Sammy can like a champion one day and flop terribly the next day. He has a punch and is game enough. He didn't do so well on the coast, but he fought decently when he defeated Georgie Levine here some weeks ago. In the semi-final Harry Smith, black middleweight with a punch and a former amateur champion to boot, will engage Hcnny Goldberg. In a ten Leo Dazzo will meet Al Rowe.

Two more bouts will be pre sented. Adler Brothers Advance At New Utrecht Nets The Adler brothers, Lewis and Milton, former captain-elect of the Brooklyn City College tennis team, gained tiie second round of the New Utrecht Y. M. C. A.

net tourney last nfoiht by conquering Bud Horwitz, former New Utrecht School star, and Mark Klausn, Willoushby C. C. N. Y. captain, by 93.

1214, 63, in a match finished from last week. In a mens singles first round match, Lester Friedman conquered Emanuel Wolf. 63, 6 4. Another match was halted by darkness wilh Horwitz and Lawrence Brekman deadlocked at 63. 57.

Horwitz had won the first set. Calls Referee Right In K. 0. Decision At tlic Di.boy Post (Mass.) amateur bouts a boy was knocked down from a blow to the midriff and counted out by Referee Jerry Later a doctor examined the boy and declared he had been fouled. A State police officer then told the announcer to stale that the decision hud been reversed, which wus doiw.
