Why, it could scarcely have occurred to any one to ask.

The joke was obvious, though as its victim one might not share Mr. perception of its humor: It was contained in Markewitch's music, as drastically inept and trivial as any that has been heard in our concert halls during the decade. In this case, his smile must have had at least a suggestion of irony in it, for and this is painful to report the performance last night of the introduction and fugue was quite KTST. hand as it was mildly hissed on the other. If those who applauded had leisure after the concert to consult their program notes, the patent satir of J.

N. and Virgil Thomson's comments on Markewitch and his career to date may lead them, even though their ears would not, to adopt a different attitude on the occasion of the next introduction here of a Markewitch score. It is necessary, I suppose, to add that one finds the Introduction ana Hymn intolerable for other reasons than those usually assigned for hostility to new music not because it is original, daring or in any respect difficult to comprehend, but because it is imitative, conventional In its eccentricity, and of transparently dubious motivation. Mr. Koussewitsky's program opened with Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik." The Markewitch followed, then Ravel's "Scheherazade." with Olga Averino as solo ist.

Last night one reviewed the conviction that after "Daphnis et Chloe" and the piano suite "Gaspard a la Nuit," "Scheherazade" is the most felicitous of Ravel's works a product, like the other two mentioned, of a period in the composer's life when he was capable of sincerity and wrote music out of an impulse which today-he would consider naive. Miss Averino was not ideally chosen as soloist: she is an intelligent and an artistic vocalist, but "Scheherazade" requires of the singer ai abstraction from her immediate surroundings which Miss Averino's delivery of text and music did not suggest. "Scheherazade," I might add, will be repeated at the Boston orchestra's concert at the Academy of Music this evening.

Last evening's program concluded with Strauss' "Heldenleben." Introduction and Hvmn Hs.vel Scheherazade" Strauss Ein Heldenleben" the Town Hall, where she gave her first recital of the season. It must be confessed that the smaller confines of the Town Hall revealed some defects which are not apparent over the orchestra at the Metropolitan. There was occasional loss of quality when the singer's voice was heard at its fullest volume, and some lack of smoothness 'in the suave music of the Italian airs which made up the first group. These included Bononcini's "Deh piu a me non v'ascondete," Pergolesi's "Tre gl-orni son che Nina," Gordigiani's lo mio amore andato" and Giordani's "Caro mio ben." A Schubert group followed, comprising "Aufenthalt," superbly sung, "Der Tod und das Maedchen," likewise impressive in its dramatic intensity, "Die Post," and "Der Erl-koenig," of which the singer made a music-drama in miniature. A group of four songs by Franck bellishments. The last of this group.

"Schon blueht der Mohn, was in many respects the most effective. Hugo Wolf's "Neue Liebe" and "Citronenfalter" and Richard Strauss' "Ruhe, meine Seele" and "Schlagende Herzen" completed the printed list, to which the singer added many encores. Kurt Ruhr-seitz provided his usual distinguished piano accompaniments. R. E.

B. Julia Nessy, a soprano who is said fn have had numerous annr-nr- ances abroad, where she has been highlv praised as a coloratura so prano, made a deferred debut yes- terday afternoon at the Town Hall. Her recital, originally scheduled for the early Autumn, was postponed on account of illness. This may account for the bad vocal condition of the singer, who gave little evidence either of native gifts or acquired art. Mozart, Schumann, Rossini and Johann Strauss were the composers represented on her program, as well as arrangements of -folksongs of Mme.
