In its capacity as a bellwether of the Stock Exchange flock, unusual importance attaches to Steel's action. Sentiment among the directors is reported mainly favorable to continued payments at the regular rate.

Most Street guesses at present are that there will be no change in the dividend tomorrow. Scarcely no one looks for omission, but a few commentators believe that the rate will be cut. Removal of thp uncertainty tomorrow should help the market, regardless of what is done. Gossip in the Street Is that U. S.

Steel's unfilled orders will be sharply higher at the monthend than on Sept. 30. The same is said to be true for other stetel companies. The impression prevails in quite good quarters that this gain will persuade U. S.

L. Polk St Co. Truck and commercial car sales were virtually on a par with those in preceding month. Passenger car sales in September approximated 80,0000 units, it was estimated on the basis of reports from 41 states, showing total registrations of 72,646 units. This total was 12.89 percent below the 83,397 units registered in the same states in August and 34.64 percent under the 111,164 units registered in thase states a year ago.

Sales of commercial cars and trucks in September apparently approximated the August total. The estimate for the months was 15,300 units, against 15.081 the month previous and 25,967 for like month in 1931. The report showed registrations of 12.440 units in 40 states, which was 1.58 percent greater than the registrations in the same states in August, but 42.7 percent less than the registrations in the same states a year ago. It fell fliihtly more than 6 cents in the pound, which, added to its loss last week, means a drop in five days of nearly 5 percent. There are so many explanations of the weakness in sterling, nearly all of them quite plausible, that it Is extremely difficult to accept any. Possibly, it is the concentration on explnation that is bringing not only weakness, but speculative attack upon the position of sterling. Withdrawal of support by the British government had been asserted, but there were evidences of some support, whether official or otherwise, Jate last week. Japanese competition, based largely on a yen depreciation of more than 53 percent, is believed by many an important factor in the derision to let quotations drift.

Stories that the sterling equlization funds' of is xehausted were not widely credited. France Faying Dollars Frpnch buying of dollars today speedily reduced the franc note from 3.94' to 3.93 cents, this eliminating for the present the likelihood of any outflow of gold from New York to France. At the franc top today dollars were Just about at the gold point. France was also said to be a seller of sterling, but francs are scarce In London and it was suggested that France had been compelled to operate through New York. The Street gave little attention to the rise and subsequent reaction in other gold currencies on the theory that the market Is disorganized and sd reflects momentary conditions to an aggrevated extent.

Conversion? It is sugsested by the American Banker that the United States mipht profitably apply the conversion idea to its higher rate debt, as successfully done in Britain, France and other countries. If the United States could secure conversion from a 4'i and 4 percent basis to, say 3'4 percent, says this organ, an annual economy of $36,000,000 might be effected. The Idea has been frequently suggested, but quite a number of obstacles are in the way. Auto Output Lags Actual output of automobiles is said to be lagging behind actual retail sales at the moment, unsatisfactory as the latter are at present. This undoubtedly means that dealers' stocks are exceedingly low and should gne decided impetus to output as well as sales when the new models are announced next year.

It also accounts in considerable part for poor current earnings. Triple Bottom in Wheat For the third time in two weeks wheat prices touched the first bottom, which would seem to indicate that a price of 47 Va cents for December is bringing in fairly good buying May broke to a new low for season this morning. However, resistance in the latter was also good at the lower range and substantial recovery followed. Or-dinarih resistance at a given point fci tv or three successive times is considered strong evidence that a base has been established from which recovery can take place. Freeing City From Bankers The mentality outlined In Controller Berry's statement that he has devised a plan whereby New York City would be freed of the bankers incubus Is one of the reasons why Investors have greatly lost confidence in New York City's credit.

Officials, showing solicitude onlv for themselves or their party, itnrl none for tfce investor, already badly upset by the shrinkage in the value of his Investments, do not promote confidence. And it is a described therein In this Judgment, are to Grace Stroud. Arthur Hill. Grace Hill, fi be sold SUBJECT to. delity Deposit company ol Maryland.
