Handle 4.000.000,000 Pounds Daily These great establishments, capa ble of daily converting more than 4.000,000,000 pounds of raw material into 12.000 barrels of refined sugar, are supplied with raw sugar in large part from Cuba, but also from Porto Rico, Louisiana, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, Formosa, and even Java. In addition to running the Brook lyn refineries, one great company.

In these properties there are 278 miles of railroad tracks. This company, employing 1,300 workers In the boro. operates refineries in four other American industrial centers, Boston. Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Orleans.

Annual Business of $200,000,000. Although Brooklyn's largest refining company did an aggregate business amounting to 1200.000,000 in sales from all their refineries, the sugar was refined last year at a total loss of $1,693,070. If if. had not been for the Tact that this company was also a producer of sugar, as well as the country's greatest refiner, the loss would have been more severely felt. A peculiar outcome of last year's sugar Industry was that the sugar producers made money, whereas the cane sugar refiners operated at a loss.

To Expand Facilities That the outlook for the sugar. When the fire took place in tho winter quarters of the circus which is now holding forth in Manhattan the big two-ton rhinoceros and the three-ton hippopotamus were without vehicles to convey them to the Greater City. STORAGE BATTERY HINTS Radio fans using storage batteries for lighting the filaments of their vacuum tubes will secure better service from their storage battery and prolong its life if they will adopt the practice of charging their bat tery completely each time. The process of discharging a bat tery or drawing current from it. always develops a form of lead known as sulphate in the plates. When a battery Is being charged this sulphate is again dissolved. If.

however, the sulphate is allowed toJ remain in the plate for a considerable period of time it hardens and is dissolved with great difficulty. Undissolved sulphate in a storage battery represents a loss in the capacity of the battery to store elec-trienl energy. When a battery Is operated in 0 partially charged condition for weeks on end and the sulphate is never completely dissolved, a loss in capacity will result and In time the plates may be permanently impaired. While a properly designed and constructed radio battery is made with heavy plates, and such batteries are less liable to Injury from neglect of any kind, a slight overcharge every four to six Weeks will be found beneficial. A battery Is not completely charged until it begins to gas quite freely.
