SWITZERLAND SHIPS FOOD TO AUSTRIA More Than 1,000 Tons Sent to Vienna--Flour, Rice, Milk and Chocolate. Washington, December 28-The Swiss Government today began the shipment of more than 1,000 tons of foodstuffs to Vienna fer the relief of the civil population, with the cooperation of Dr. Alonzo Taylor, HerHoover's representative in Southern Europe. Word to this effect was received, by cable, Minister. today by Dr.

Hans This emergency shipment consists of 600 tons of flour, 440 tons of rice and 60 tons of milk and chocolate. To make it up the Swiss population sacrificed a part of its own food card. Mr. Taylor is now making his headquarters at Berne, and the cable indicated that the Swiss Government will co-operate fully in assisting in the revictualizing of the Austrian civil population. It is believed here that the shipment is an initial one, through Switzerland, nd that whatever sacrifices of fool tuffs the Swiss people make out of their meager stocks will be replenished from this country as rapidly as tonnage becomes available in greater quantities.

GURNEY GETS INCREASE.

Huntington, L. December 28-- William Gurney, Deputy Superintendent of Highways, had a pleasant surprise when he reached the Town Hall this morning. Without any request or suggestion from him, the Town Board, at its regular meeting on Friday, increased his pay from $3 per day to $4. This was in recognition of the increased amount of clerical work that has been placed upon him in the reports now required by the State Highway Department. The increase in salary takes effect on January 1, 1919.

PRAISE FOR DROWNED SAILOR. Ensign Leroy W. Tilt, commanding the U. S. S.

Aramis, has written a letter to Mrs. Albert E. George, mother Quartermaster Frank George Belle Harbor, who was off washed overboard from Scout Patrol 418 and drowned early last week while his boat was off the Delaware Capes, telling how he was lost and paying high tribute to his character and ability for the position he held. OBITUARY See also Death Notices, last pare. MRS.

BERTHA HAASE, widow of Leopold Haase, died on Thursday at her home, 46 Wyckoff st. She was born in Germany sixtythree years ago, but had lived in Brooklyn for fifty years. She is survived by two brothers, A. I. Namm and George Namm; a Sister, Emma Sibert: three daughters, Mrs.

Marcus, Mrs. Silberstein and Mrs. Naubauer, and three sons, Samuel, George and Benjamin. The funeral be held this morning, and the interment will be at Cypress Hills Cemetery, will Maxine Elliott--the Un-Interviewed Like Maude Adams, Maxine Elliott refuses to be interviewed. Years ago, at the beginning of her career, she submitted to what she calls the "third degree of the fourth estate," and next morning she woke to find in the things she had said in papers So she made a hard and fast dence.

never to be interviewed again. did this not only because of the She in which her first interview had way been handled--for she is a sensible person and is only too ready to admit that her one unfortunate experience is not typical--but also because she felt that if the romance and mystery of the theater is to be kept alive, the less said about the actual personages behind the footlights the greater will be the interest in them. Let the public form their own pictures of the idols of the theater, and the theater will never lose its fascination for the public, but if the public comes into contact with the players this illusion of the unreal world of the footlights disappears and the interest suffers in consequence. In line with this belief Miss Elliott long as she was acting--never appeared in public restaurants, never attended public dinners, or in any way allowed herself to be brought into contact with the great public outside the playhouse. Outside of her circle of, friends, Maxine Elliott as a real personage is THE FLATBUSH B.

S. Moss' Flatbush Theater will have for the coming week starting Monday, one of the strongest bills of the season. Pauline Frederick's latest photoplay, "A Daughter of the South," will be shown at the Flatbush the first three days of next week. Miss F'rederick has the role of a Creole girl. She rebels against being married off without her consent to a man not of her own choosing.

Tom Mix will be seen on the screen the last half of the week, in his latest feature entiled "Fame and Forhotune." It is described as one of the most stirring and breath-taking dramas that he has yet enacted. In "Fame and Mix portrays the role of a young man who, about to be cheated out of his inheritance, fights an organized conspiracy and wins. EDWIN FORSBERG. Edwin Forsberg, who plays the softspoken German spy in "Seven Days Leave," is a member of the cast which first presented that noisy, gun-powder melodrama at the Park Theater, Manhattan. Mr.

Forsberg is a son of the late Harold Forsberg, well known to cheatergoers of a past generation, and his first stage experience was with his stepfather, Frederick Bryton, in "Forgiven." Mr. Forsberg was identified with Henry Savage's early production of "Madame X' and was at one time associated with Emmet Corrigan in the production of new plays in two stock theaters in New York and Newark. BAND AT ORIENT. Orient, L. December 28-About 25 years ago one of the finest brass bands on Long Island was found in Orient.

It now reorganizes with the following members: Fred Terry, cornet, William leader; Vinton Richard, cornet; Y. In England, where spent her seven years of retirement, she has been very prominent in social affairs, but this was only after she had left the stage, never intending to act again. Her reputation as a great beauty, sums up the public knowledge on this side of Miss Elliott, whose name is known to everyone. The Maxine Elliott of today is a far different woman from the Maxine Elliott who appeared here seven years ago. Her experiences in the war zone have changed her.

More than ever she seeks retirement and the society of only her closest personal friends. In England she lives in her country home twenty miles out of London, where her ton and Lady a Forbes-Robertson (Ger-in-law and sister, Sir Johnstrude Elliott), and their four children. pass much of the time with her. Miss Elliott did not want to return to the stage, but she had spent her fortune in her relief work in Belgium and she came to America to earn money. She will not remain on the stage indefinitely.

In fact, after the tour of "Lord and Lady Algy" is finished, she will make only occasional appearances in New York and the larger cities. None but Miss Elliott's friends know her experiences in the war zone, whither she went immediately the war broke out to remain two years, doing relief work among the destitute Belgians and the soldiers on her own barge and hospital ambulance. She remained there until the Allied gOVernments had thoroughly organized such work, and then returned to England.
