Coffee, rubber and such products havo bad their ups and downs during the past two months, JuBt as they always did, but scarcely any more than usual. Rubber trade is a bit more lively than usual for this season. There is considerable talk among the officials at Para, and I understand clsewhero as well, of putting a good duty on rubber very Boon, and consequently tho rubbor doalera are bustling ont all the ready stock they havo on hand and Oil they can get hold of as rapidly as possible, so as to avoid the heavy duty which they feel certain will be put upon it Bhortly, and perhaps it has been imposed by this time, for I remember that the advisability of beginning tho duty on January 1 was being considered when we left. Of course, this duty will bo to aid the support of the Government, but I do not think it is to be imposed as a necessary measure. Lots of knowing people claim that tho Government is weak because it is in need of cash, and many wise heads predicted a financial crash at the beginning of the year, when tho yearly accounts, according to custom, would havo to be squared up.

I wonder, if this is true, why the business men at Para looked bo cheerful and prosperous when we came away. They did not appear to have innch anxiety about money matters, and the end of tho year was rapidly approaching. I think, on tho contrary, that there is just as much prosperity among the peoplo as ever, and that money circulates almost if not quite as freely as it did a few monthB ago. And furthermore, I think that if the Government Bhould stand in ncod of a little, or even a great deal of ready cash, there aro plenty of citizens who could and would be willing to loan considerable cash and security.
