The United States Court met to day in the now room provided by tho United States Marshal, in Woodman's Building, on East Temple street, near Wells, Fargo Co. The placo is a great improvement on tho old establishment, over Faust'a stables, to which the Mormon papers were accustomed to refer with derision. The time of the Court was occupied with various unimportant motions, and nothing of general interest transpired. The cornerstone of tho first Methodist church building in Salt Lake was laid yesterday, with considerable ceremony. There are now here regular church organizations of Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Roman Catholic.

MAEK TWAIN. IB is lecture on Artemus Ward iV Quaint Affair What One American. Humorist Cliinlts of Another. At eight cloek lastnightPlyrnouth Church was full of the usual Beecher people, all ready for smiling enjoyment, and all convinced that the greatest intellectual treat of the season was forthcoming. A little after eight the Intellectual Treat appeared casually in tho shapo of a young man with reddish hair and a reddish mustache.

Tho young man was attired in evening dress. His swallow tails wore of orthodox fashion, but well Bat upon. His pantaloonB had the gloss of respectable middle age. His linen looked ai neat as that of Mr. Beecher himself.

Entering upon the stage with a careless slouch, a much as to say, "Hero I am, by the Grace of God and the American people, humorist," ho was greeted by terrific applause. The audience recognized thoir Intellectual Treat at once, and they went for bim. "My, what a handsome young man to be a lecturer "He's married over three millions of money, and lectures for fun." "So ho ought, if he's a funny lecturer." "He isn't a bit funny now he's married." "He's got a baby and that takea all the humor out of him." VoUies of missiles such as these were discharged against Mr. Twain, sotto voce last night. By and by he launohed himself in the current of hia discourse and slowly paddled his facetious canoe from eight o'clock till ten, or thereabouts.

The voyage waa chiefly ono of anecdote, Mr. Twain premising that though he had promised to talk of SEVEBAL DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE he would under the circumstances confine himself to Artemus Ward whom ho pronounced America's greatest humorist. Ho stated that he would forego criticism upon the subject, bnt would confine himself to Artomus Ward's biography. His description of Charles F. Browne was not very complimentary inasmuch as ho described his hair as a divided flame and his nose as a cowcatcher.

He alluded to the Pilgrim Fathers, from whom Ward descended, with marked disrespect and intimated that one of these ancestors of his own had takon three sidoa in tho battle of Bunker Hill or words to that efff et. Ho promised to enter upou a long and miuuto description of his own family, but on witnessing tho reBtive ncss of the audience under this threatened infliction, he changed hia mind and heroically forboro from doing so. His biography of Artemus Ward waa perhaps ro markable rather for unaccuracy and inventive power thau for strict historical truth, but he fibbed with such unction that the congregation beg pardon audience listened to the sermom with their eweetoat Sabbath smile. The anecdotes were some of them old and some of them new, one or two huving evidently a moro ultimato relation to Mr. Samuel L.

Clements thau to Mr. Charles Farrar Browne. They were all good, however, and tho man who went empty and rueful away must havo a very duniuutive senso of the ridiculous. In conclusion, Hark Twain pathetically alluded to the death of Artemus Ward, expressing himself with exquisito taste. This portion of his leciure bore evidence of the ripe scholarship and genuine feeling which underlie tho humorous surface of Marl: Twain's character.

The lines, quoted, we beliove, from Punch, in testimony to the geniality of his deceased fellow spirit, were rendered with remarkablo power. Ou the whole, the lecture, which was actually nothing but a discursive and ploasant bundle of storioa, bound together by a cord of quaint fancy, heartily pleased tho audience, who frequently testified, by their applause and their laughter, the satisfaction he had occasiouod. A DISTRESSING SCENE. The End of a Divorce Suit. THE FATHER AWARDED THE CUSTODY OF HIS CHILD. The Child will not go with Him. SUPREME COURT SPECIAL TERM Jdstioe Gil DEKT.

Ruliff Bennett, agst. Isabella B. Ben vctt. This action was commenced on tho 11th of last month to obtain an absolute divorco ou the ground of adultery. The husband alleged In his complaint that ho was married to tho defendant in 18C1, at tho City of Brooklyn, and that sinco tho year 18G9 his wifo had left him and had been living in adulterous intercourso with William P.

Jach, at GC1 Baltic atroet, in this city. Tho unhappy couplo aro tho paronts of a bright boy, Eugene, who is about eight years of ago. The defendant mado no defense to tho action. Tho case was referred to Henry J. Cullen, and upon his report a decree of divorce was granted laat week.

The hoy, Eugene, has been with his mother until yoa terday, when an application was mado to Judgo Gilbert through a writ of habeas corpus, to havo him given into the custody of tho father. The result was a sceno which brought tears into the oyes of almost ovory ono who witnessed it. On tho rolurn to the writ of habeas corpus, C. J. Jack, appeared with tho mother and child and said that he had affidavits to show that tho father was a coarse, brutal man and was nob a fit person to havo control of the child.

The mothor, on tho contrary, had always had the child with her and had treated him kindly and tenderly. Luko A. Lockwood, appeared for tho fathor and produced several farmers from Long Island, neighbors of Mr. Bennett, who, being called upon, testitled that his life wob of exemplary habits, and he was perfectly prepared aud ablo to tako caro of tho child. Upon these representations, Judge Gilbert said he must award tho custody of the child to the father.

Tho father then wont to the boy, eiooped over him and attempted to kiss him. The boy at once manifested a foeling and approhenBion seomingly far beyond hia years. Ho commenced shrieking most pitifully, "That is not my papa that is not my papal I won't go with that man! I want to stay with my marca." This took placo during tho rece3B of tho Cir cuit, but a number of persons had remained, and the court room was still quito full of people. The Httlo fellow ran about from ono part of tho room to tho other to avoid hia own futher, whom ho had been brought to regard with aversion. Tho mother at IaBt rushed to tho husband and implored him to desist, for fear tho result might prove fatal to the child, as ho had recently recovered from scarlet fever, and was subject to convulsions.

Upon the recommendation of Judge Gilbert, tho parties and counsel retired withjtho child into a privato room. In about ton minutes the father left with tho boy in his arms, crying and screaming the mothor rcmainod behind, shaking her flst at tho rotroatiug pair, and saying that Bhe would be even with them yet. THE STOLEN POLL LIST. TJhtc Miftsiiiir Document not Rcturncd Wlio tc 4iosHips say on tno subject. It appears that neither the poll list of the First District of tho Sixth Ward, which, as announced in tho last Ibsuo of the Eaqle as having been stolon from tho offlco of tho County Clerk, nor the copy there of which was spirited away from tho the Common Council Chamber, bo3 been returned, all announcements in tho morning papers to the contrary notwith standing, Tho subject forms an absorbing theme of conversation in and around the City Hall and County Court House.

By many tho thoft is compared to tho stolen voucher case iu Now York, but the amo defense adopted by "Slippery Dick" is granted to tho Inspectors and Poll Clerke, who are given full permission to Bay, "Wo may havo acted carelessly, but we can see no evidenco of our dishonesty." Many aro disposed to look at the matter from a moral standpoint, and to wonder how anybody could bo so dishonest as to steal a public document, aa is, of course, charged upon the alleged compilers of thoallegedbogus document. But this is met by others, saying that a man who would bo dishonest onongh to manufacture a fraudulent document would not bo any too honest to steal tho same instrument, if by so doing ho thought ho might avoid a sojourn at Sing Sing. Others claim that tho matter is not alone personal to the alleged perpetrators, but also to tho Deinocratis party, which it is claimed by those of this class, must stand all tho odium of the robbery. These aro an swered by another clasa, saying that tho party had nothing to do with the matter, that tho alleged guilty individuals had already been subjected to legal pro ceedings by a Democratic ivistrict Attorney and a Democratic citizen special assistant. Still another class unite in charging negligouce upon the attachesof tho office of the County Clerk, but thiB charge is answered by tho clerks and others, in substance as follows The office of tho County Clerk is one for the deposit of records which citizens have a right to inspect that iu pursuance of this right B.

F. Tracy, and othora inspected that and other docu ments, and mado a copy of the bogus poll list, so that tho evidenco still remains. So far as tho alleged guilty ones aro personally con. cerned tho general opinion seems to bo that men who would bo knaves enough to put themselves in such a tip hi place, wonld be blggro fools not to uso every en deavor to get out again. He entered McHenry'a store on November 15 intoxicated.

Tho barkeeper refused to give him anything but soda water, and McIIenry was not there when he went away. He probably foil from the Castle Garden pier. While the attraction'; at this Fair are not aq nuraoroua as at thoso monacrenUTpri Gj which appeal with force to tho charily of the entire city, the di play, nevertheless, is a fine onr and the articles are of choice quality and in every desirable variety.
