The PEOPESsaiONAi. Abbha. Sfesierday, May four.thousarid people fathered within the Union Ball Grounds, to witness the nrst oontest for the oaam pionahip, between the Mntnal and Boston nines. The weather was all that could have heen desired for ball playing purposes, bnt it was a little warm for. spectators, inasmuch aa the thermometer stood at 91 In the shade.

So great was the Interest taken ia the gaaie, however, that the vast orowd bore the full rays of the sun without flinching, rather than miss a Bingle inning's play. TheMutualsbad out their full nine, and they never supported a pitoher better than they did Oam nungs in this game. The Bostons presented their full fdrie also, and uo one who had soon them play In the Atlantio game would have imagined that it was the same nine playing, so great was the contrast they presented between the liatlesB, careless fleldtag of Tuesday, and the earnest activi.y they diauLiyed yesterday. Harry won the toss for innings, and sent the MntualB to tho bat at 3:40 P.M., by which time fully Bii thousand people muBt have been in and about the grounds, tho pecuniary results of the match being vory satisfactory to both parties. Despite the poor play of the Bostons the day before, and the fact of their defeat by the Athletics, a large number of PhiladelphianB, who had seen both sides play, invested ou tho Rods" at tho odds of 100 to 60, and with a confidence that decidedly affected the market.

Tho MutualB opened well at the bat with three first base hits and two runs, one earned and the other given them by errors, in which Gould, Bogera and Leonard took part. After this, however, the KedH Bettled down to biz," and for the next eight innings the Mutuals wero allowed to score but a solitary base hit, aud almost in succession were disposed of without adding a run to their score. Wo have Been some noteworthy displays of pitching skill within the past fifteen yeara, but we never flaw such judgment exhibited in the position than in this game by Spalding. After the flrat inning he had tho Mutual nine completely at command, and the shrewd manner in which he disguised his change of pace and deceived the flight of his batting adversaries was admirable. It was the perfection of strategic pitching beyond question.

Finely supported sb he was in a majority of innings the Boetons did not surpass the MutuaU if they equalled them in fielding skill, tho Mutual infield being finely attended to, especially by Hat Held, Start and Pierce, while Hicks' catching was quite a feature. In the outfield too, Eggler was all that could have been desired, and Bcohtel mado two good catches, and at third base Beveral bcauv'nl BtopB were made by Fulmer. But the weak point of the Mutuals in this game was tho pitcher's position, where, too, their opponents were strongest and yet Cummings pitched just as he usually does when effective with other nines but he had no novices to face Mm In this game. His "pacers" were punished vrith ease, and it was only when he ohanged his pace aud dropped a ball short now and then that he oamjbt the Bads napping. They scored 17 first base hits and earned 8 runs off his pitching, the worst punishment he l)as yet received.

It was a test match as far as the pitching was oonoerned and the Mutuals were found wanting. The support he received was admirable, the Mutual fielding errors being fewer than the Boston'd. Hatfield put out and assisted in disposing of eleven players in fine style, and Start made some splendid plays, while Peaice did effective service. The Umpiring was the best we have yet seen this season, and about as near the mark as oan be expected, but few unfair bal'a being allowed to go by uncalled not ten in the whole game while the strikers were kept to a strict observance of the rules. The Boeton fielding attunes waB quite a treat to witness Geo.

Wright, though he muffed at times, mado some wuuiw Biujjs, ana ms inrowing waa Blmply perfect. One of his samples of infieldtng in the eighth inning where he ran in and Bcooped np a ball and throw It to Gould with one motion, was the perfection of the art. He assisted no less than nine timea and put out two players beside. MoVey'a oatching was admirable, and Barnes' base play at times up to the highest mark. Gould, too, waa as reliable as ever in a majority of innings.

Two double triays on each aide marked the game, Gerry, Wright, Barnes and Gold making those on the Boston Bldo, and Hatfield, Pearce and Start on the Mutual Bills, Start's fine catches from Hatfield's rather wild throwing being noteworthy. As we said before it waa the pitching that did it. Jnst think of the Mutual nine being put out in eight innings with but one first base nit credited to them. They had every incentive to win, and worked like heroes in the field to do it, but they were out pitched and out batted. To day phenomenon" stock is quoted at a decided discount.

Toward the closo of the game the Atlantics present began to smile, as they saw Uie $12,000 Mutual regulars" failing to score as many runs as the untrained Atlantic "co operativos" did. The Atlantica made five first baao hits off Spalding, the Mutuals only 4, the first striker in both games taking the lead. To day tho Bostons play the Eckfords, asd it is to be hoped they will not disappoint the spectators by careless play, as they did on Tuesday. The following is the score of the game MUTUAL. The members of the Long Island Quoit Olnb will commence active play for the season of 1872, by having their opening day on Tuesday, May 14, on Roth well's grounds, 1,203 and 1,205 Atlantio avenue, near Nostrand. The grounds have been considerably improved and a Summer house erected, where the lovers of quoit playing can sit in the shado, and enjoy the game and their cigar at the same time. Chess. The New Chess Club.

The Committee on constitution and By Laws met at the residence of Mr. S. B. Chittenden, last night and drew up a constitution, by laws and code of rules for the government of tho new club, and thoy will report the same at tho meetinc of the club, at the Librarv on sntiirdR. niht next.

They have secured very liberal terms from the uirectora oi tne mercantile UDrary, ana the newChes9 Club may be set down as ctu fait accompli. The Committee last night selected an excellent Board of Officers, and also nominated an Executive Committee, the lattor of which have charge of tournament nnH matches. The arrangement with the Mercantile Library Association requires that the terms of Bubscrip nuu tuui uo ion uuuura year, wnicn win include the privileges of Library membership, thus making tho Chess Club dues in reality but five dollars a year although ten will have to bo paid, part of which goes for Library dues. Members of the Library Association are eligible to mombershln in the Chess Club as they are full members of tho library, but no longer; auu vubj am bu icuae iu uo uiouiuers 01 lue VU6SS U1UU when their Library subscription runs ont. xne rules and regulations which the Library Directors have stipulated for, are the prohibition of smoking in the Chess Boom from 10 A. M. until 10 P. that hmn the period that the Rooms will be accessible to members of tho Chess Club, The latter however, are privileged to occupy the rooms appointed for chess play until 11 P. during whioh hour smoking will bo allowed.

No came but Qhesn will hn allowed, and all games played are to be governed by the rules of chess contained in "Staunton's Hand Book of Chess." This club will start into life under the most auspicious clroumstances. The subscribers already include gentlemen of high character and influence, aud the promise is that the next chess season will see the new club the strongest playing organization, and dc oidedly the most influential oheas club in the United States. The Committee voted to retain the name of the Brooklyn Chess CIu'o, but it seems to na that the Long Island Chess Club would be preferable. The history nf the old Brooklyn Club has been a oheokered one, marked by failures, reveraee, and a laok of unanimity, as wollas by noteworthy successes. Under the ciroum stances, therefore, it would be well to start out with a new name, ana as that 01 Long island would include a more extensive clrole from which to draw members, beeide being a new name for a chess oraanization.

it seems to us preferable, Thero are many players now who can claim to be members of the Brooklyn Club while visiting other cities, there are none, however, who would thus nse the Long Island Club without proper authority. It is to be hoped that there will be a large meeting at the rooms on Saturday, at 6 P. M. The Turf, Pbospeot Park Coubse. Yesterdav.

May 9. Tho Anchor Line steamship Britannia, Captain Hig gius, from New York, April 24, for Glasgow, arrived here to day. a ah. A Cheap and Better Article For Half the money Petroleum falling the Place of Coal. Headers of daily and scientific journals have doubtless noticed occasional allusions to a a new and powerful, and, at the same timo, economical and safe illuminating vapor, which having but recently beon fully developed, has not as yet roooived the attention it really deserves at the hands of the public.

This article ia nothing more nor less than the product or crude petroleum, so manipulated that at a comparatively Bmall cost a light three timea as brilliant as that from coal gas, such as is furnished by the gaB oompanies, is secured and for a great deal leas money. THE PBOOESS in itself is Bimple, and does away with most of the costly appliances ordinarily need in gas houses. With a single retort set in a furnace four feet by five feet in extent. In twenty four hours a quantity of gas can be made equal in illuminating power to 20,000 cubio feet of coal gas, the relative cost of which will be as one to five or more. As to comparative cost it will suffice to Btate that this petroleum gas can be manufactured for 11.40 per 1,000 oublc feet, while that furnished by the City Oaa Works coBta almost three time: that amount.

It must also be taken into consideration that the illuminating power of petroleum gas ia equal to that of 70 sperm candles, or what ia termed A SEVENTY CANDLE LIGHT, while that of coal gas is not more than a fourteen candle light, if even that much, and bad at that. From the more recent experiments it has been shown that a light can be produced by this gaB equal to even eighty sperm candles. This gas is by no manner of means a resolvent of naphtha, gasoline, or other light articles distilled from petroleum, but, on the contrary, is A PTJBS CABEON VAPOB GAS, of a fixed consistency, without residuum, and incapable of condensation even at an inordinate prossure. Offers have been made to various city gas oompanies to apply this new and oheap process, but without success and the reason for this, as mado plain by some of the directors communicated with, was that it WOULD NOT PAY THE COMPANIES, or in other words, they could ot make enough money out of the people and furnish such a good light. A new field for the use of this gas has been recently discovered, and experiments made prove ita utility in THE MANXTTAOTUBE OF STEEL of a superior quality to that made by the ordinary method.

By recent teste made at the Chrome Steel Worka in Kent avenue, tho fact has been developed, beyond a question of donbt, that great advantages are gained in this important branch of Industry, Uie manipulation of ateel, by the use of petroleum gas. It is used In a peculiarly constructed blast furnace, and owing to the purity of the gas and tho entire absence of all the detrimental qualitiea found and contained in coal, there is noi, the least waste or scale apparent through oxydization. THE HEATING POWEB OF THIS GAS, applied aa above stated, may be more properly understood when it is stated as a positive fact that, in the course of an experiment, fire briak had fuaed and run like lava from the Interior of the blast furnace used in making a test at the Chrome Steel Works. WASHDiaioK, D. ft, May 910 A. M. SYNOPSIS FOB THE PAST TWENTY FOUR BOUBS. An area of low barometer haa moved northeastwardly from Nebraska to Northern Lakes, Michigan and Huron, accompanied by brisk winds.

Partially oloudy weather is now prevailing over Southern New England and the Middle and South Atlantic Statea.other wise sloudy weather very generally rain from lower Missouri and Ohio valley to the Upper Lakes. Clear weather haa continued at San Francisco. The river haa continued falling at St. Louis. The barometer is now highest over the Eastern Gulf States and Dakota.

PBOBABIMTIES. The lowest barometer will move northeastwardly Into Canada, with diminishing pressure over the New England and Middle States. The area of cloudy weather and rain extend eastward over the northern portion of the Middle States during the day, and probably over the southern portion and the New England States to night, with southerly winds veering westerly. Increased cloudiness is probable for the Southern States, with threatening weather, and probably rain from the Western Oulf States northeastward to the Ohio Valley. Bising barometer, northerly winds, and probably clearing weather extend southeastward over the northwest and upper lake region.

Briak winds are probable from Lake Michigan to Ontario, but dangerous winds aro not anticipated. LONG ISLAND ITEMS. The Some Journal says that Hempstead is fast filling up with Summor sojourners. Mr. Emil Orlbennan, a New York importer, haT recently purchased at auction tho late residence of Mr.

She avoided it by telling him the piano was out of tun. He thon put his hand on her Bhoulder.

She shouted toward the basement for her husband (a feint). He then caught her hand, squeezed ii very hard, and rushed out. This scamp should be caught and punished in some way for frightening the ladies, and it is reasonable to suppose he will steal something beeide cards. Sooth Bbooelth. MONEY MARKET.
