i ideas of Beethoven, and felt that the master was there himself pouring out his soul to the few there that understood. If Beethoven were alive, such interpretation of his music as that given by Madame Ney, would in no small measure make up to him for' the tremendous amount of misunderstanding that he suffered during his life, The program consisted of the minor Sonata, Opus 57 (Appassionata), the Sharp minor Sonata, Opus 27 (Moonlight), the minor Sonata, Opus 111, the last of the piano Sonatas, the Andante Favori, and Six Variations, Opus 34. Madame Ney is such a great musical personality that one realizes he is going to hear an artist as soon as she enters upon the stage. Under her treatment the Sonatas, especially the Opus 111, ceased to be Sonatas, and became Symphonies for the piano. After her interpretation of the Opus 111, one begins to realize how difficult it must be to give such a perfect performance, and how difficult it must have been for Beethoven write the manuscript for this work, as he was totally deaf at the time.

There was nothing lacking to the artist in technique, tonal coloring, phrasing, and dynamics. Her playing was not that of a virtuoso, nor of a scholar, but something far greater and which comes from putting aside all ideas of personal glory, and working alone for the glorification of the music which is being played. Backstage we found Madame Ney just as impressive and real as before her audience, with a temperament which gives out nothing but real love to her admirers. She was kind enough to extend her program by playing the Deutchetanz, the Eccosaise, one movement of the Pathique, and an Italian Sonsr. P.

The efforts were those that Ludwig Van Beethoven left in the form of his Piano Sonatas, and their masterful interpretation by Madame Elly Ney.
