Henry Hazard, fighting in France, August fifth. Mr." Smythe, who was the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Sraythe, of 22 Pierrepont Street, was fighting with the Fifteenth Battalion, Canadian Highlanders, and had been a soldier in the' armies of Great Britain since the outbreak of the war. He was wounded in the battle of the Somme last year and had only joined his regiment last February.

He died in the First Canadian Field Hospital at Epatles, of wounds received at Lens. Born on the Heights, twenty-five years ago, Henry Smythe had always lived there until a little more than five years ago, when he went to Alberta to take up a section of Canadian Government land. As soon as war was declared, he went to Calgary and enlisted as a private in the Fifty-first Battalion, Canadian Contingent, British Expeditionary Forces. After a year of training in England he was trans- ferred to the Fifteenth Battalion of Canadian Highlanders at his own request, so that he might see service in France at once. From that time on he was in every engagement in which the Canadian forces participated.

Although in many desperate actions he came1 through scatheless until the in that long battle, he was desperately wounded in the head. In the case of men receiving such wounds the Britsh practice is to send them at once to Eng. land for base hospital treatment. Although not expected to live, he was sent to England, and after six weeks 'in the hospital recovered. He stayed in England, convalescing, for nearly six months, but then asked to be returned to his regiment.

His first jbattle after rejoining his command was that of Vimy Ridge, In a letter he sent to his father following that engagement he said that Vimy Ridge "was the worst of all." Another letter, the last, that came only a few days ago, contained no news of where he was and was chiefly a letter of thanks for some supplies which had been forwarded to him. He has one brother, Mr, Richard H. Smythe, an architect. Zabriskie Mrs. John 878 Flatbush Avenue, August' ninth.
