Rufus Dawes Dies: Ran Chicago Fair Brother of Former President Was Renowned Businessman Chicago, Jan. 8 (P)-Rufus C. Dawes, president of Chicago's A Century of Progress Exposition and brother of former Vice President Charles G. Dawes, died today. He was 72.

His secretary said he died suddenly at his home. Dawes had been in relatively good health, his aids said, until late Saturday night, when he suffered a heart attack. He had rallied yesterday. A son, Charles C. Dawes, said death WAS by coronary thrombosis.

PROUD OF FAIR'S SUCCESS Rufus Cutler Dawes was known AS an able business executive, especially in the promotion and management of public utility enterprises. Charles Gates Dawes, Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. Charles conceived many of the projects which Rufus managed." The four Dawes brothers Henry and Beman were the others--all achieved business successes. They were the sons of a famous father, Gen. Rufus A.

Dawes, who, in the Civil War, commanded the 6th Wisconsin Regiment, to which a monument has been erected on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Their mother was Mary Beman Gates Dawes. IN LUMBER BUSINESS Rufus was born in Marietta, Ohio, on July 30, 1867. After his graduation from Marietta College in 1886. he became associated with his father in the lumber business.

This continued for 11 years. Then in 1897, at the suggestion of Charles, who had been appointed Controller of the Currency in the McKinley Administration, Rufus went to Evanston, to become president of the Northwestern Gas. Light and Coke Company. From then until 1929 all four Dawes brothers were associated the gas and electric business in various parts of the United States. Adolph E.

Nelson, Ink Firm Agent Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow the Fairchild Chapel. 86 Lefferts Place. for Adolph Eric Nelson, 48. a former wellknown resident of the Bedford section, who died Saturday in Hines Veteran's Hospital at Hines, Ill.

Mr. Nelson was born in Brooklyn, a son of Ida M. and the late John A. Nelson. and after attending the public schools, studied at the Island Medical College.

He joined Troop 101st Cavalry, during World War and saw active service in France with the 104th Machine Gun Battalion of the 27th Division, taking part in all its major and minor offensives. After the war he rejoined the Chase National Bank and subsequently became affiliated with the J. M. Huber Ink Company, Two years ago he was sent to Chicago to take charge of the local branch of the concern. Surviving are his widow, the former Bertha A.

Jones; two children, Jean Marylin and Donald Eric: his mother, and two brothers. John S. and Clarence E. Nelson. The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev.

Henry C. Whyman, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church. and the Rev. Dr. Moses R.

George's Church. ing. Burial will be in Flushing Cemetery. Miss Peck. who lived her entire life in the Peck homestead on Lawrence Flushing, in which she was born, was the youngest daughter of Isaac and Abby Phelps Beers Peck.

Her family resided Flushing for On her mother's side Miss Peck was descendant of Nathan Beers, a staff officer of General Washington and a charter member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and of Dr. Timothy Phelps Beers, surgeon, for many years on the Yale faculty, who served in the War of 1812. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, in which she held various State offices. Other ancestors of Miss Peck were Judge Isaac Mills of New Haven, a founder of Sandusky, Ohio; Judge John Phelps of Stafford Springs, a member of the First Continental Congress, whose iron foundries made many Revolutionary cannon, and Deacon William Peck, a founder of the New Haven Colony. IN CITIZENSHIP LEAGUE Miss Peck was a charter member of the Good Citizenship League and belonged also to the Flushing Historical Society, St.

Cecelia Society, and Mrs. Vincent Astor's advisory committee to the New York World's Fair. Since girlhood she had been a member of St. George's Church, of which her father and grandfather were vestrymen, She was a also A member of the Daughters of 1812, for which she helped establish the Treaty of Ghent chapter. A sister, Miss Emma Jaggar Peck, two nieces and a nephew survive.

Helge T. Karlson, War Veteran, Dies Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Merrick, Jan. 8-Helge T. Karlson of 101 Wynsum Ave. died suddenly early Sunday morning.

Mr. Karlson was born in Brooklyn 43 years ago. In 1927 he moved to Merrick. Mr. Karlson 1S survived by his wife.

Lelise Karlson; one sister and two brothers. Funeral services will be by the American Legion at of the Redeemer at 2 p.m. tomorrow. his home he tonight; also at the Church Immediately following the services he will be interred in Pinelawn National Cemetery, Mr. Karlson was very active in athletics in Brooklyn until the World War.

He was corporal in Company 313th Infantry. He was gassed and received many shrapnel wounds. In his earlier years the Brooklyn Baseball Club offered him a trial with the club but he declined because football was his favorite sport and he gave most of his time to that. In the sports world Mr. Karlson was better known as Dutch Karlson.

8-Private funeral services were held here today for Philip S. P. Randolph sportsman and horse racing enthusiast, who died of a heart attack Saturday. He was 74. Burial will Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, tomorrow.

Mr. and Mrs. Randolph came here from their home in Hempstead, L. I. He usually lived during the Winter and kept a stable of several horses here.

He also was interested in trapshooting. A member of a distinguished Philadelphia family, Mr. Randolph was a descendant of Edward Randolph who fought in the American Revolution. Once well known as a polo player, he owned the polo grounds at Narragansett Pier. Mr.

Dandolph's first wife was a member Featherston family of Philadelphia, once part owners of the Evening Bulletin. He was married about 15 years ago to Miss Josephine C. Watts, who survives. He is survived also by three sons three daughters of his first marriage. They are S.

Vaughan of 130-54 Van Wyck South Ozone Park, Queens, died yesterday in Nassau County Hospital from injuries received when his automobile got out of control and crashed into a pole on Northern Boulevard, Roslyn, a short distance from Trinity Church.
