MAKES THE GRADE Major league scouts are very much interested in Bill (Bunnell Berner, a mainstay as catcher of the University of Virginia baseball team, runner-up in the State championship. Bill, who captained Austin Dugan's Erasmus Hall ligh School nine in 1944, has finished his third successful season with the Cavaliers. He lias spurred all offers, preferring to graduate before deciding what course to follow. The Brooklyn boy compiled a balling average of ibis season, lie led bis club with IS runs batted in on 18 hits. Among his safeties were two homers, five doubles and two triples.

In his first two seasons he chastised the horse-hide at clips of .400 and .31 S. respect jvel. However, it. was not until this season that be became the regular catcher. While at Krasmus Hall, Berner won letters in both baseball and basketball, the latter under Al Badain.

He played on the scholastic court against such stars as Sid Tannenbaum, then of Thomas Jefferson and later of N. Y. U. and now a pro, and Bob Cousy, Holy Cross College luminary from Andrew Jackson. His teammates on the Erasmus Hall itiintet were Mason Benson and Sherry Marshall, who later excelled with C.

C. N. Y. and Columbia. The nickname of "Bunnell" was bung on him by bis classmates at the Buff and Blue institution in Flatbush.

He entered Virginia in 104(1 after service at the Jacksonville aval Air Station, where be an athletic specialist. "However." Bill remarked, ''the closest 1 ever got to active sea duly was playing basketball on an aircraft carrier in dry dock." PLAYED WITH GEHRINGKR Among Burner's teammates on the Jacksonville Air Station baseball nine were Charley Gehringer, formerly of the Detroit Tigers, just added to baseball's Hall of Fame: Ted Williams, clouting outfielder of the Boston Red Sox. ami Bob Kennedy of the Chicago White Sox. Four of Viiginia's regular football players as well as line coach Ned McDonald accompanied Berner to the Cavalier institution in lf-lfi. Bill expects to receie his degree in June.

and is interested in coaching basketball ami football. When queried as to his future plans he remarked, "I would definitely be interested in playing professional baseball, but my college course must be completed before I will consider any overtures." An incident in one of this year's games brings about a touch of irony, Berner came to bat against Sid Rosner of Vale University with the score tied and two men on base. Three years earlier, while Rosner was burling for James Madison High School. Berner had collected three hits off him. Berner strode to the plate in" complete confidence.

Rosner got revenge for past annoyances from bis fellow Rrooklynite by striking him out to have the 10-inning game end in a 1-1 deadlock. ENTERS HALL OF FAME Jerry Manheim. a pitcher of the Jaguars of the Senior Division of the Kiwanis League, carved his niche in the Hall of Fame when lie hurled a no-hitter against the Braves at the Parade Grounds Wednesday evening.
